The Kitty Genovese story was a news article that sensationalized what happened. 2 men, one who was her “friend”, saw what happened clearly and failed to call police right away delaying help. One dude decided to take a nap, who cares. The friend called neighbors like an idiot wasting precious time and is the one who said he didn’t want to get involved. I’m a counselor who specializes in domestic violence. Counselors are just not trained in this unless they very specifically specialize. Classes are elective at best and at worst nonexistent. I’m not surprised at all. So generally you’d have to seek out internships or go get extra training in the area. It should be a default mandatory class because it’s so common, but it’s not. Look up Florence Farr, they were partners for a long time and Shaw treated her pretty poorly. Farr was a badass and a huge influence on his work regardless.

If you are able to afford it, go to an EMDR trained counselor. Really any counseling approach that works to get trauma out of the body is incredibly useful (TRE and brain spotting work too).
