(going into grade 12) Oh, I was assuming you were an adult. I think that you are going to have difficulty finding the type of financial support and stability you are seeking with men your own age. I would be wary of any established man who is interested in a high schooler. Any man you meet right now you are likely going to have to start from the bottom with, which is okay. Focus on supporting your own self for now, manicures and all.

I don't think you need to give up music festivals. However, you're describing this as a hobby when really it sounds like a lifestyle. You're not meeting men with steady jobs living this lifestyle, you say. Taking time off to "constantly" attend concerts is not usually a perk of full time work. What lifestyle are the men you're seeking living? Perhaps you can budget your time like you'd budget your money. Give yourself so many concert hours or days per month and leave it at that. Fill your life w…

My two closest friends are girls I knew from high school, we were in band and drama together. We are very similar in our sense of humor and our loyalties to each other. What matters to me most in a friendship is acceptance and authenticity. These women are my closest confidants, yet we are on different lifestyle paths. One is hopping on and off the CC right now, which she is convincing herself is nun mode I think, and the other is in a weird sort of open relationship with her husband / father of…

I've heard of Toastmasters! I'll have to see if there is a chapter near me.

They possibly started as more of a ladies thing, but there are definitely coed versions. They are pretty common among organizations and clubs. Our local Rotary holds one weekly as part of their meeting.

Thanks for sharing! I can so relate to all of it. I love especially: It's the work that all other work and education has been preparation for. I came to this realization in the last month of earning my bachelor's (6 years ago now). Everything I have done in my life has been for my children, and I will continue to serve them in that way even though they aren't yet earthside. Congratulations on the upcoming birth of your daughter!

He's going to be pleased to have a sexy, classy, confident woman on his arm. If you feel self conscious being taller than him, he will notice. In high school, I hated standing taller than a bf. When I met my current SO, I was wearing heeled booties every day. Being taller than him was normal and I couldn't care less now. It really is a mindset shift. Wear what makes you feel great!

Why is it that you can't go in with him? I think this might be part of the problem. Understandably you wouldn't be eating the ice cream, but suggesting that he go by himself when he wants your company doing it is probably putting him off. While he's getting cheese, you could check out if they have a gift shop or gather ideas for flavors of ice cream to make dairy free at home.

That's great! I love that you decided on what you wanted and let that bring the right person into your life.

Our culture just shames us for it. I feel guilty sometimes that I rarely want to do anything else except be a mother. Everything I do is motivated by giving me the financial freedom and skills to parent the way I hope to. We need all the smart women to have lots of kids! Or at least raise them. I would so adopt, but I can't imagine missing out on pregnancy entirely.

I very much relate to your situation, especially the sleepy bedroom and hyper-criticism over household chores. I found RPW at about the same point in my last relationship, but it was in essence too little too late. The resentment I felt towards him already was too much for me to want to push through or keep my mouth shut when I needed to. Take a look, a HARD look at whether or not this relationship is worth keeping for you. If so, I see some good advice in this thread as to how to do that (mine …

Wondering how long others have known they wanted to be a mom! For me it's as long as I can remember, I've been told since my brother was born when I was about 18 mos. I would go so far as to decline caffeinated sodas because I was "breastfeeding" my baby dolls, at the age of 3. Honestly, I envy women who maybe aren't sure or have less desire to be pregnant. I've accepted my nature, though I do wish differently for my children in hopes they will see themselves as having more options (in regards t…

Take time to collect your thoughts so you can understand why you are upset and be able to speak calmly and clearly about it. Not every disappointment needs to be expressed immediately, and that includes nonverbal expression. When do you find your man is most attentive at listening? Bring it up then if it's something that can wait.

I know this was harsh but there is just nothing of RPW value here aside from leaving a former toxic relationship but the manner in which you did so defies most RPW values. I'm not claiming it upholds RP values, I agree it most certainly doesn't. Finding RPW and doing my best to implement its values in my last relationship was the start of what led me to realize that I couldn't fix it. I made some majorly bad choices in the way I handled things. And at a certain point I felt stuck and didn't know…

I have been making excuses every morning about why I couldn't go to the gym that day. I thought it hadn't been that long until I looked back at my calendar and realized it had been 2+ weeks! I dragged myself there this morning until I was already in the gym and had no excuses left. It was slow and tiring and I didn't finish my planned workout because I had to leave for work, but damnit I went! I am training for a sprint race on the 4th and I actually feel like I will make good time.

I have always been very low maintenance with my hair, and never really happy with it. For about a year I've been using custom shampoo by Prose. After finally feeling okay about my hair (have found a cut that flatters me and stopped coloring it), I got an amazing compliment from my new hairdresser. She said, "whatever you're doing is working because your hair is like silk." !! I highly recommend custom shampoo as a first step if you don't know where to start. Prose will give you a recommended rou…

I could have easily tripled the post length by including the positives of this guy and the self improvement I've been working on for the past 3 years, improvement which my ex was simply not on board with and I outgrew him quickly. Despite questioning "should I leave" least every 4 months during that time, and before, it was my loyalty to him and frankly a mistaken belief that TRP always means stay. It took meeting a dozen people who are living lives they are happy with, including those in stable…

My ex is a good man AND I tried and tried for years. I understand what you are saying and I appreciate the empathy. You really got to me when you said "haven't been able to resurface." I feel that. This experience has been a rediscovery. My mom says to me all the time, "I feel like I have my daughter back." All of what you said is true for me, and my ex is still a good man.

Thank you for the thoughtful questions. I'm sure you meant them to be somewhat rhetorical, so I will do my best to address them concisely. To start, I am indeed avoiding cannabis. I probably would smoke it with friends if given the opportunity, and so I have both forged new friendships and created smoke-free hangout ops to avoid what could be a slippery slope. To be honest, I didn't vet him very purposefully in the first few weeks and was going a lot on feeling. I did have a list that I had made…

Yeah I am not proud of the cheating. At this point, it is what it is. I definitely gained a lot of perspective from the experience and found empathy for others who have cheated. Not that it is ever right, it's that sometimes the stories or reasons we give ourselves for making poor choices sound really good at the time. Man would I have loved to have you as a girlfriend then! I give a great blow job. I really care about making it an experience for my man and we are a bit voyeuristic, so I will often offer them in adventurous, semi-public places (locked broom closet of the casino, dressing room in the theater, tent camping, etc.) I also am a pretty good cook and baker. He especially loves how I creatively incorporate leftovers into new meals, which saves us money and keeps waste low and excitement high. I'm working on getting myself into peak physical shape. Yes! We do enjoy a cocktail or beer together sometimes, and I would probably smoke marijuana with my friends if the opportunity came about. Pot was the biggest issue for me personally as I could never set proper boundaries with it. Not having it in my house has been essential.

To add onto inviting a friend over: if you feel like this breakup may drag out longer than you want it to, consider inviting her over today (if I’m not too late). Have her waiting in the wings so that the scenario doesn’t last longer than an hour, or however long you feel you can handle. Sometimes we all need a friend to remove us from a less than desirable situation.

I’m so sorry honey, this really sucks :( The advice in this thread is great, and from reading your comments it seems like you are in a better place than you think you are. Focus on your health, your hobbies, and your friends, and things will get better in time. As life goes on, you will be so glad you didn’t waste another second on this weasel. You’ll probably also be able to see in hindsight the games he’s been playing with you, which will keep you from over-investing in future relationships. W…

These are all such great ideas! I’m glad to know that I’m not alone in my feelings, and that we are in a similar situation re: getting settled. I’ve been doing some intensive soul-searching this week so I can gracefully articulate my wants, needs, hopes, & fears.

Thank you. I have been doing CBT and talk therapy on and off for almost 20 years. I’m also very introspective so I’m working on it :) My dad and I are now able to talk openly about the way my home life has affected me, which really helps.

I can totally relate girl. My dad was the type to flip his switch instantly and leave you wondering what you did to change his mood. He has zero close friends, male or female. I’d say his number one male confidant is his dad. His younger friends still participate in behavior which he has since outgrown and actively avoids (e.g. drugs, financial frivolity, general shadiness). As a result he doesn’t actually hang out with these men, we mostly go and see their bands play. And his older friends are nice gentlemen, however not quite role models for the life he hopes to live. As in, they are either unmarried, childless, or underemp…

After reflecting on your & other comments, I’m most upset that we don’t seem to interact much besides logistics. What do you want for lunch, Does the kitten have food, Can you clear off the table, etc. This is majorly frustrating because we spend a LOT of time around each other. Segue into him working less. He is around me all the time. I find this frustrating because I am introverted and really need alone time to recharge. I wish he would leave the house more so that I don’t have to leave my co…

You are absolutely right, I think concrete ideas are essential. And as you followed up with below, I’m sure there is an articulate way to bring him my problem without cornering him into a specific solution. When I say emotional labor, I mean the general “noticing things” that come with day-to-day life. We need toilet paper, I should follow up with Dad *(my FIL) about dinner this week*. In the context I mentioned this was when he and I spoke in the spring. I have since realized that most of this …

Will you expand on how “traditionally feminine hobbies” can find you friends outside the home? I guess I’m curious which hobbies. The only one that comes to mind for me is sewing, with the thought of quilting clubs or the like. The older women and volunteering are great ideas, thanks. There is a 50+ senior center near my home where I am considering volunteering/teaching a class. I imagine I’ll meet older women and possibly young volunteers such as myself.

My motivation comes from a true desire for self-improvement. I want to be a mother and before being a competent mother is being a healthy woman and a good wife. Although I am dedicated to him, I would be wanting to practice this sort of character development regardless of our relationship. Regardless, for reasons that may take me too long to articulate, I want this man as my life partner and the father of my children. He does not seem to be matching my effort. My BFF is a heavy drinker and really into the bar scene. I am definitely not lol. We compromise by hanging out at the self-serve wine bar or the bourbon bar, because they have a classy “sit-and-sip” vibe. Somewhat on topic: does anyone else have a friend that is a great friend when you’re together, but doesn’t prioritize you at all? We were both out of work since we were traveling full-time; at which point it became clear we were going back to “normal life,” he told me he didn’t want me to have to work. He said if I want to spend money, then I should earn it. Otherwise, he wanted me to be able to pursue whatever I wanted. I happily agreed because I have been working on launching a blog & business. Thanks for bringing this up, you too u/PhantomDream09. I didn’t think of this. He is overweight by probably less than 20 lbs. but doesn’t appear to be fat in any way, do you know what I mean? He expresses desire to eat healthier and be in better shape. He seems to seek permission to indulge in cheat foods and I provide such, as I don’t know an appropriate way to suggest he stay towards his goals (it also benefits me because he gives me the okay when I want to indulge in my own pleasures). We have been together 4 1/2 years. I’ve been on RPW everyday (+other reading) for a few months now. Our bedroom life is vastly improving, sex at least weekly. We are living in his grandma’s spare room for the next 7 weeks until we leave the country again. We are both unemployed, with him having a promising job interview in the morning. BF and I are moving internationally and he recently made the decision to return to our home country for a few months (we've been traveling in the interim) in order to re-up our cash supply. He has really transformed into a provider role and seems to be taking great pride in being the breadwinner. He has no expectations of me to work, which is ideal for me currently. Thanks for the discussion ladies. tea, you mentioned to u/g_e_m_anscombe above that even if BF does have sleep apnea, it may not be the biggest problem. After some reflection I agree. Seconding u/rivertorain's response. I think of feminine behavior less about action and more about interaction. Femininity and masculinity are complementary. The real beauty comes from how they work together, not the stand-alone. So being child-free or having a high powered career is separate from the way you interact with your partner and complement his masculinity on a daily basis.

I started employing RP philosophies about two weeks ago, including some I read in Fascinating Womanhood (still working on getting ahold of a few Laura Doyle books!). A few nights ago I was rinsing my plate in the sink after a gathering. BF made a comment about how our host's dishes game was not up to his standards and that he was glad I have learned to keep a clean kitchen - this has been a long term lesson for me. Thank you. Can you expand a bit on "consistency and guidance or direction?" My interpretation is that the consistency part comes from me - ideally him as well, however we can only control our own actions - and that the guidance and direction would be from him, as my captain. Is the open acknowledgement then where I would affirm the need for such guidance and direction?

Thank you for your response. To answer the "fact or assumption" question, in years past this certainly would be fact because I waited to step in until it was 'emergency' mode. Now it seems I have the tendency at the first sign of a bad day to flip my switch, and you're so right: that makes it easy for him to step down. I'm glad you pointed out my language when I said "make me." I purposefully avoid phrases like that because of the lack of accountability. I couldn't think of a different way to pu…
