In Australia, there is another solution. The government has been slowly rolling out a scheme of vouchers and direct payments to all unemployed people. Careful about who you decide to partner up with if you are heterosexual. I lived a similar sad story, and I can say from experience that you really are subconsciously attracted to women like your mother... so I went from a woman who abused me badly to a younger woman who abused me badly.
