Hmm, but surely the other country where you commit the crimes will want to prosecute you for them, won't they? Does this mean you can get double punishment if you do crime abroad? These things are so weird sometimes.

Okay, we're not talking about guilty/not guilty. We're talking about the severity of the punishment. Surely there should at least be different levels of punishment for different crimes, right? Guessing you aren't suggesting to punish kicking a dog with death sentence (it's still a horrible thing to do)

American laws still apply to Americans abroad Wait, if you're american and go abroad and the laws there contradict american laws, what do you do? And I'm not talking sex stuff, but simple things. That sentence just doesn't seem to be true.

I am against death sentences. I was actually going more for something like I'd let her out after 10 years (still sounds like an unimaginably long time, honestly) and give her a chance at living the rest of her life out.

Yeah I definitely agree with punishing her and taking things seriously, but 42+5 years? For 2 child molestings and one inappropriate communications? Does that add up one by one, or how do they come up with the numbers? Somehow it feels like even a fifth or so would still be a very severe punishment that would still allow a person to come back to the real world.

But nobody is saying we should be following a that book. They are just saying "oh hey, these ideas actually come from that book. There were some good things there." And you come and throw a fit at everyone who mentions that our culture is very connected and has roots in christianity, for better or worse. Also you've mentioned that you were brought up in a christian household, which it seems you do not like. You just come off so anti anything christian that it's impossible to have a conversation …

Yeah I agree, I also don't subscribe to the model of "you ruin one life we ruin yours" If that was the goal, prisons would be a stupid idea and we should have really kept executions. Prisons instead aim to (or should in my opinion) - keep the too dangerous people away - give the criminal a chance to think and change his ways Some 10 years ago we've had two women come to our summer camp to talk about their prison experience. One was there for 3 years(smuggling drugs I think), the other only like …

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
