As a daily NYC subway rider, I can tell you that a much greater problem is caused by many women's enormous backsides. Not joking here. Women's bottoms spread as they age, and women tend to carry their weight on their hips. Too many women are either obese or simply too snack-enhanced to sit comfortably among civilized people. How excruciatingly odd it is to hear the NY Times constantly refer to the defendants as "football players," "Player #1", "Player #2," etc. They are almost never called 'students,' 'defendants,' 'young men,' or 'the accused' at all. Using terminology like 'player #1' and 'player #2' is how I might describe a football play, and that seems to be what the NY Times is pretending to describe. Rape is a football play. But no footballs appear in the story at all. Nor any football plays. Hm.

Perhaps some of you are are not yet familiar with the 'Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.' They bring civil rights lawsuits against universities for just these kinds of sexist abuses. Also, don't forget the Patrick O'brian series, including 'Master and Commander,' and Lewis's 'Horatio Hornblower' books. These are wonderful. Several years ago a work acquaintance asked me just your question, and I brought in a few of the O'brian books. When I next saw her she said both her husband and her son were devouring the whole series! Also, J.Henri Fabre's books on insects are great literature. He seems incapable of writing a boring sentence, and is especially accessible to young folks.

'Sink the Bismark,' by CS forester, was a big treat when I was a kid. 'Wind, Sand, and Stars,' was another great. It's by Antoine De St. Exupery, the great French writer and aviator. Anything about Shackleton is sure to amaze. Older boys should be handed the novels of Raymond Chandler or even Doctorow's 'Billy Bathgate.' Forget the rape equivalence. That's nonsense. But the first part of your post is interesting, and I've heard it often. 'Having a baby....responsibility of both parents,' is exactly the argument made by pro-lifers. Do you intend for this viewpoint to be treated as valid when applied to men's reproductive rights but invalid when applied to women's reproductive rights? I'm in the US, and perhaps it's different, but the rule of thumb is this: always get a lawyer immediately. Don't even talk to the police, ever, alone. Make them deal with a pro. It will cost you, but it might save you a world of trouble. I don't hate cops, but they do not represent my interests. Never, ever, answer a question from a cop without a lawyer present.

I think the previous commenter hit the nail on the head in suggesting that the mandatory sentences were intended for men, not women. Though it's all disgusting, I wonder how many men have been similarly abused. A lot, I would guess. I think it's best to always try to make friends, and possibly allies, before you have to make enemies. Actually, this ruling simply forces men to subsidize women's hair cuts. The regulation does not say that the services provided must be equal, just that the prices must be equal. There is no reason to believe that anyone- women or anyone else- views this as a standardization of service. Men's prices will have to rise. Women's will fall, but the differential in care, attention, and time will remain in women's 'favor.'
