You’re right what you’ve said has got nothing to do with maternity leave. Both the man and the woman can take the time off at the same time - it’s to do with raising children not brick laying... (?) Go play golf if you must but at least it evens the score out a touch.

Actually the best model is - give men Paternity leave for the full term (16 weeks here in Aus). This means there’s no hiring disadvantage for women (out of fear of them leaving on maternity leave), and the kid gets more time, plus then the woman doesn’t have to do all the raising of the children and can pick up herself career more easily. Best way to have empowered contributing women and men sharing the load equally on all fronts.
