i agree autism isn’t fully well understood, and that the DSM codification process is inescapably imperfect ... that said my limited understanding is that there are simply too many cases of early manifestation for it to be 100% environmental ... as for the halo / horn effect, i agree that may play in to how this work is interpreted, even if it didn’t affect the methods or quality of the work per se

it seems to me they’re actually confusing the point a little when they estimate sexual selection accounts for ~a quarter of all “purifying” selection. The issue is what they mean by “purifying,” which is not what most lay readers would interpret it as, i don’t think. Overall, it seems fair to reason that sexual selection writ large accounts far more than a quarter of determining whose genes get passed on, or not. The authors’ point is that they argue their data show that the limited proliferatio…

yeah i agree... by hierarchy effects, you mean MMC has a better account of how men historically toggle between/tolerate monogamy (as opposed to polygamy), depending on social rank?

You have a point here (ie., post-hoc rationalization: it’s very real and super common, across multiple contexts) ... that said... have you ever had an active rotation of female sex-partners? ... Frankly it can get emotionally and logistically exhausting. ... Alphas (for lack of a better term) do the same post-hoc rationalization for (relative) monogamy, not because they’re restricted by ability, but rather because they’re restricted energetically and emotionally. ... I.e., it’s not just betas.

this fits the paper’s MMC model to a tee
/r/PurplePillDebate22/01/20 06:21 PM

The article says the MMC model implies human sexual behaviour is facultative, in that we have evolved tendencies to adapt either to long-term or short-term / monogamous or polygamous behavioural sets, depending on context. So, what you say is happening in “modern society” would well be captured entirely by MMC... given the measurements of sexual-behaviour difference are still quite small relative even to humans’ (also relatively small) sexual dimorphism in size & aggression. For society to be pu…

I think what you mean to say here is folks like Tooby, Cosmides, Pinker, etc., have an excessively modular view of the effects of natural selection on human behaviour

it’s a decent point: but as others have noted MMC (as defined in the paper) accounts for this. That said, i can see how the phrasing could mislead in an excessively opposite (from MCFC) direction ... How about something like MFCB (moderate female choice bias) ..?
/r/PurplePillDebate22/01/20 04:57 PM

agreed ... what kind of responses are you referring to? Are guys on this thread denying male mate choice?
/r/PurplePillDebate22/01/20 04:51 PM

indeed... i actually found the article fairly convincing on that front: MMC doesn’t dismiss the dynamics fuelling sex differential behaviour, just that such differences are facultative, while still allowing for (and selecting for the consequences of) monogamy-type behaviour under certain social conditions

Not very common, but it does occasionally happen, imho. Usually because (i) period; (ii) woman has a medical condition in which PIV is inherently quite painful (this is sadly more common than you might expect ... i’ve dated 3 women for whom this was the case); (iii) woman comes from a more conservative or traditional culture But... generally speaking ... not so common Source: 37m

There’s no bad news here. If you’d asked for social media or something, it well could’ve worked. And even then, you still totally have a shot, assuming you see her again and play it cool and polite. She’s just being sane...for all she knows you could be a charming sociopath. Plus, with so many other dudes around, she had her reputation (and the prospect of unwanted attention) to worry about. Was def worth it regardless.

However, it is pretty clear from both studies, plus anyone who lived in earth can see it,that girls underestimate the role of physical attractiveness on selecting a partner. This is a completely different statement. Generally, it’s accurate. Women underestimate the degree to which looks can affect their preferences. There are a few studies that suggest this. That’s totally different from saying “girls mostly only care about looks” Chihuahuas underestimate the degree to which they enjoy KFC =/= D…

You are totally right There's even this study that concluded the exact same thing https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/19558447/ That’s not exactly what the study concluded. It also had quite a few important limitations. And while they found some correlation of men being attracted to girls with specific personality traits... For girls being attracted to guys they found only correlation with physical appearance. Almost correct. Of the factors they measured, they found the only correlations to be…

Women are into whatever (or, rather, whomever) evokes the right combination of emotions. For many women (especially young ones), a guy’s looks, and perceived status in her social circle, are a short-cut to making her feel the right emotions. There are good evolutionary reasons for this. But this is only true superficially, and initially. ... A guy’s words, deeds, and perceived personality, and the woman’s idiosyncratic associations and preferences, are all just as if not far more important lever…
