I'm not saying whether it is fair or not, just that that is the way the law is.

It doesn't matter what the contributions were.

If it is decided that you have been together long enough, and I don't know exactly how long that is, I have heard that months together can be long enough, it is roughly going to be a 50/50 split of the combined assets at the time of the split. Each child adds about 5 percent to the custodial parent. Obviously the parties can agree to whatever they like, but this is a basic rule of thumb about what a judge would likely decide if it gets to court.

Not really, I've only heard of it once in all the people I know who have split/divorced. That example was basically married straight out of school for 20 or 30 years, never had a job in that time. The judge took the view that the woman had almost no chance of getting a job at her age with no workplace skills.

Here in AU, marriage doesn't really make much difference. The act of co-habiting for a relatively short time can produce an entitlement to a share of the assets held at the time of separation. There is no alimony though, unless one partner can prove that due to the relationship they can't support themselves.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
