Articles are written and cited in other research papers, and by getting those citation that’s how you build a name. The only way you can “give” a citation is by writing a new paper and citing an older publication, which is common but is not a significant source of citations. It doesn’t seem like there was a good control to this study as far as number of mentors (i.e. does having 5 lose mentors vs 1 strong mentor have more of an impact). The problem was that the information that was being fed into the AI was from successful candidates (which had a high percentage being male) and it was excluding resumes that didn’t match with those. They found the AI was excluding resumes that explicitly had the words “women” (like society for women engineers, all women’s colleges etc.).
