Similarly, you don't meet a celebrity and gush over how amazing they are. You just firmly established yourself as a fan sucking away their energy, not an equal they can have a relationship with.

Start small. Talk to cashiers, waiters, people passing on the sidewalk (watch out for that dogshit over there!), whoever. Try talking to older people and women you aren't interested in, too. You don't have to walk around having no idea how to talk to strangers and then gin yourself to go talk to the hottest girl you can find first and foremost with the hopes that you're going to just charm her right into your bed on the first attempt. I mean, if you have the stones to do so, go ahead, but if you…

What people say they want, and what they actually respond to, may not be the same thing. They think it's creepy when it's a dude they're not interested in. Many of the same women who say it's creepy have a fantasy of a Prince Charming who comes in and does...exactly the same thing, only they like him so it's different somehow. If you are charming enough and sincere enough and don't seem like a hungry predator on the prowl just looking to scoop them up, it can work. If you present the wrong vibe,…

For every x number of women who might reject you for being short, there are y number for whom it's not a dealbreaker, and there's z number for whom it's actually their thing. Same with being brown, or being just about anything.

They did you a favor. They were immediately straightforward and didn't waste any of your time or energy. And you know that the thing they objected to isn't some serious flaw you can't fix. I mean, you can't fix it, but it's not a flaw. Just that you're one thing, and they want another. You're cinnamon and they want nutmeg. You're cilantro and they want parsley. Or whatever. Would you feel better if they'd feigned interest for a while only to ghost you later and you never knew why? At least this …

Women generally do this, intentionally or not. Not that long ago someone I knew got a new girlfriend. When she wasn't around, the other girls from the established group were talking shit about her, because that's what happens, even though they weren't interested in the man she was with in that way. Guess what? They're all good friends now and probably can't even remember their initial antipathy toward her. It takes time to be accepted as part of a group. The women in the group will automatically…

The thing about this that really helps is that you can get a really good idea of what a conversation is supposed to look like when you aren't worried about shit, and really don't care if it could ever lead anywhere. Focus on the landing, AKA ending the conversation gracefully. Focus on transitioning topics. Throw a joke or two in if you have one in the moment.

What do you mean you were still talking when you were home after the second date? Text, or phone call? And who initiated it? What do you mean you had a phone call the next morning? Who initiated it? And for what purpose?

The most recent date I had from tinder (The only one in the past 10 months) went extremely well but the girl simply disappeared after I asked her out again. What evidence do you have that the date went not just well, but extremely well? Are you sure the feeling was mutual? Most people who have an extremely good time are almost always pretty eager to repeat that experience, so you should be able to understand the potential for doubt.

Play games, make jokes, tease them (gently, don't get too mean with it or anything). Treat them like you would a kid, without being condescending. Don't overdo any of this. In moderation.

Any major city has tens of thousands of single women at the very least at any given time, maybe many more. If you can't find anything you like with all that, you're the problem.

Late at night, think really hard about how much you like and respect her. Don't actually talk to her, though, in person. That would be suicide! It's good you asked strangers if it's OK to talk to her so that we could tell you no.

People always say don't do it, but half the people I know who are married met at work. The place where you spend most of your waking hours. I say go for it, but always be careful. Don't create a situation that will bite you in the ass later. Be sure the chick isn't a psycho and if it turns out that she is, back away as slowly and calmly as you can without riling her in any way.

You get over this by doing all the shit you're afraid of, even though you're afraid, until you stop being afraid. I'm sure you were hoping for an easy answer, something you can do that will get you from where you are, to where you want to be, in a nice, comfortable way. Sorry, that shit ain't happening. You have to put yourself in those social situations that you dread, where you will quite certainly experience discomfort and underperform. And then do it again. And again. The only way to success…

Preload every response people give you in this thread, and next time you're in a situation even slightly similar, be prepared to say one of those things, or close to it. Do it no matter what. Do it even though you may crash and burn. You're supposed to take shots and fail. The more you fail, the better you get. The more you don't try, the worse you get.

Start acting toward the girls you want, the same way you act toward the ones that want you. It's not just random chance, or that all girls who are "better" don't want you. It's how they're reacting to how YOU behave toward them. If you can figure out how to treat the girls you want exactly the way you've been doing with the ones you don't, who want you, you'll be fine.

Just text her at night and see if you can turn it into a booty call. Or when she texts you invite her over right then. Just say you're bored and ask if she wants to come over. It could work. Don't even think about trying to set up a real date or make future plans. She's lost that privilege, and she'll probably flake again. Just shoot for immediate and I think it might work. Plus, it just makes it that much better for me to know that after this is done, this chick essentially disappears and has no desire to see me again. I don't know why, but I like that. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Realize that the whole time, this wasn't out of your reach, wasn't too hard for you to accomplish (including dating, kissing, sex, etc.), and that it's something you're fully capable of doing as well as anyone else--and really always could have. You can do this at high school. Ever notice how the coolest kids are the ones who just assume they are cool? They aren't afraid to talk to anyone. They act like they belong. They aren't afraid of your opinion, and if they gave your opinion of them much thought (which they don't) they'd assume it's favorable. If they like a person, they assume they have a shot and go try and talk to that person. It's entirely possible to say that you, personally, aren't ready or comfortable with acting like this …

It could mean she's not interested. At this point you're split into two groups: not interested, and actually doesn't want to kiss on first date. But presumably if she's just not into you, she'll refuse that second date somehow or other, so it seems to me that if she goes on the second date, you've eliminated most of the former category and the girl probably does like you and just didn't want to kiss the first time around.

"I don't think anyone"...might as well stop talking there. No matter what you think nobody does, someone does it, and maybe a lot of people do. You can't just easily say "nobody does this," especially when it's something as obviously possible as resisting the temptation to kiss someone they're attracted to. OK, so if you said "nobody grows wings and flies around like a bat on their 18th birthday", you might have a point, but what you're saying is definitely not true.

Who cares? The worst that could have happened is that you found out she's married, which is what happened anyway. I don't see how having taken a shot and missed for this reason would have hurt you. You're supposed to be outcome independent and get used to trying and failing, so that you don't worry or care about getting shut down by a woman because it's just not a big deal and you don't have to take it personally. If you go around counting situations like this as a win because it "wouldn't have …

If she's depressed and admitted it, your job should be easy as long as you keep after her. Even if she flakes on you, I'd assume it's depression and give her another chance or three. Depressed people might be hard to get out of their shell, but if she's in her shell you probably don't have much competition, and she might like you and still blow you off just because pressure. Don't follow the normal rule of ditch her if she flakes. Put a little more effort in and you'll be rewarded, most likely.

A lot of times a girl mentions the boyfriend out of fidelity to the boyfriend. Her (partial) hope is at that by mentioning him, she has done her due diligence. It may be that she mentions him precisely because she IS interested in you, and she's trying to use the boyfriend as sort of a shield. It has happened to me before where the boyfriend was mentioned, I was not deterred, and after that first mention the guy might as well not have existed because he didn't come up again. If you black out all the time, you already have a serious drinking problem. I say it's time to stop drinking. Go hang out anyway; or don't, if you can't. But just don't drink at all for a period of time, just to be able to do so. Go back to drinking moderately after you have proven you can go without any alcohol for an extended period of time. So if I'm following you, the goal is to never feel good or proud about what you haven't already done. Making a plan is meaningless, having potential is useless, and shouldn't make us feel anything, since the plan accomplishes nothing, the potential is wasted if not used, and we have done nothing that counts till we do the actual thing. If that didn't happen for you, I'm very sorry, but you have to realize that it's not your fault, and it's not because there is something wrong with you. There was something wrong with the people who raised you for this to have happened. Un…

Go outside on any relatively busy street with a sign that says "Never been hugged in my life, please help". Be clean and smile. I bet someone will hug you. You'll probably think this sounds ridiculous, but I bet it would work. Better yet, maybe if you say what area you live in, someone on here can meet up with you and be a hug-wingman for you. If you are nice and clean and non-threatening, I guarantee you could get hugs from strangers all night with the right marketing. If your hug-wing or anoth…

With this attitude, you can pretty much count on getting exactly the same outcome in the future. Women almost never drop their panties for desperate sad sacks (practically speaking, let's just say they never do; I only said almost never because I'm sure it has happened, but it's very unlikely.) With a better attitude, including a willingness to have fun, and a belief that maybe, just maybe, you have something to offer and are actually WORTH having sex with for at least some women--you might just…

Dude, I'm not sure I'd do it, myself; but if you have success while using this word, then, well, I guess it's not that bad, dude. But dude: if you're like totally hitting a wall and failing all the time, then maybe you should stop saying "dude," you know what I mean, dude?

I would say you first make a point of telling her that your time is valuable and that she should not waste your time. Do it in a serious tone, looking directly at her as if disappointed. Then reschedule immediately, telling her all is forgiven (as long as she acts suitably and seems to be sorry), and smiling and putting her back at ease. If she blows you off twice, you move on and stop calling her, barring extraordinary circumstances.

Astrology is a bunch of nonsense, and I will not stoop to pretending to buy into what I believe is preposterous bullshit.

If you're a psychopath, therapy really not going to be much help at all. Being confined to an institution is probably what you need.

Frankly, XKCD is often clever but it's also pretty dumb sometimes (the highbrow kind of dumb) and this one was an example of that.

You can join them, you can befriend them and go to their parties, or you can join other groups/clubs that will expand your social circle. Or you can do all three. I was at a school like this... more than half of everyone was Greek. Guess what? I joined a fraternity. But I also was in the male a capella group. And many friends of mine were on the Ultimate Frisbee team, which was like a fraternity in many respects also.

He might also be afraid of actually succeeding. I mean, we all know where this stuff is potentially leading, if he does it all right: the bedroom. And maybe he's actually not that comfortable with this, even though he wants it, so his mind starts fucking with him the minute this seems like it really might happen.

So my day started off as me doing philanthropy work with my fraternity to get people to register to vote. Kind of off-topic, but I fail to see how trying to register voters is in any way philanthropic. It's volunteering for a political cause, not a charitable one. Sorry, I know this wasn't the point of this post but I needed to call this out because it bothered me.

I didn't say it isn't valuable. But it's not a pay off. Pay offs are gains that are actually realized, not nebulous wisdom gains that may be useful in the future. Example: if you played the lottery and lost, you wouldn't say that it paid off, even if you gained the wisdom that playing the lottery is a poor financial decision.

Actually, the drug Requip (used to treat RLS) has been linked in some cases to increasing risk-taking/risky behavior, and therefore, it's actually possible in theory that the same drug used to treat Restless Leg Syndrome could potentially be used to treat Approach Anxiety as well.

Hard work always pays off. This is false. There are many times in life when hard work reaps absolutely no gains except a hard lesson.

Maybe this depends on the group of guys. We had a couple guys with some money problems, and while they may have been excluded from taking full part, we wanted them at parties, they were still our friends, and we encouraged them to be able to get back in with us because we wanted them around. Some guys with extra money might have even helped them out (I think this happened but wasn't talked about). One guy never had the money for dues after a year and therefore didn't continue to be a member offi…

I joined a fraternity because all my friends were. A big group of guys who were all friends from the same hall all went to the same one, where we met other guys who quickly became great friends, too. After the year of joining, the next year where we were the ones trying to get people to join was a different experience, but also really cool. It's a fun thing to get a bunch of cool newcomers who you befriend, or the people you trust befriend, and get them all to join the organization and become pe…

True as this may be, it's the only solution. By definition, the only way to overcome social anxiety is to make an attempt at sociability. If you don't, you're succumbing to it, not overcoming it. There may be other things people can do along with it that make this task easier and increase confidence, but talking to people is what must be done.
