Before my dad let me operate a vehicle, I had to know how to change a tire, pump gas, fill windshield fluid, check oil (fill if necessary), use the parking brake, and jump a dead battery. Can't be more grateful.

Because if you're old enough to drive a car, you're old enough to change a tire.

I'm pretty sure I know you. Fight for him, dude. I know you will. Don't give up. My dad fought 9 months for me. My mom was on his side telling the court she didn't want me, and he still had to fight for me because default was to the mother. Granted, that was 26 years ago, I hope things have changed, at least a little. It still won't be easy, but you know you have to do it. I know how much you love your little man and I know you rock fatherhood. Don't worry about what other people think - all tha…

The problem with the quoted text is that this post IS generalizing a whole demographic! OP is generalizing that all MRA are also equality-feminist-haters.
/r/MensRights30/04/12 06:07 PM

TL;DR: stop calling out all feminists here as man-haters or "unwanted", This flat out does not happen. I was called a feminist when I told an anecdote (wanting equality, not priority) on this subreddit and I don't even classify as one. When a redditor called me a feminist, they weren't using it as an insult. You're stereotyping MRs as being as judgmental as feminists are stereotyped to be. If you're egalitarian, drop the gender completely.

I understand completely what you mean, you're spot on with that comparison. You're absolutely right about Mario having a disconnect between friend/mentor and owner with Crosby. He had Recchi on the ice more than with Mario for his first season, and he had Roberts for a half season or so. Compared to Ovechkin who had..who? Zubrus and Cassels? Your analogy is perfect! I love that so much.

Oh, I have tons of respect for Datsyuk. He's got superior puck handling skills. I also always forget that he's only 33! Have you ever noticed that his head is basically the shape of a triangle? Anyway, that's not important. I definitely agree about the collective Crosby boner. The dude has tremendous talent, there's no denying that, but he doesn't deserve to be the poster boy of the NHL just because someone deemed him the second coming. My god, when he came back the first time this season, the C…

Ditto, if that wasn't already obvious :) Yeah, I don't know how to feel about the Devils/Flyers series. The Flyers could probably win if the entire team went on D and left Giroux up front by himself. Brodeur is probably fighting for his final time, but I think he's a day late and a dollar short for the chance. I'm really not a fan of Kovalchuk at all (I have season tickets to the AHL team who was affiliated with Atlanta; I had to pay attention to them by default and I can't stand him on the ice …

Wall of text For starters (I've posted this in a comment here before), my mother wanted an abortion but wanted to stay with my father and have a family later (there was a large age difference). He said absolutely not (he believes in abortion, but only when necessary. Aborting me was not necessary as everyone involved was healthy and stable), and he would put up with the loss of her if she would carry me to term and hand over complete custody. She agreed. In court, my dad had to hire a lawyer to …

Yeah, it'd be great to see a bunch of competitors who have never won, but at least it's eight teams who haven't won in awhile. Well the only one in it that "recently" won is NJ. And that was back in 03? So, at least 9 years (8 seasons because of the lockout) removed. The Rags haven't won since 94, and Philly since the 70s, right? So the ones who have won it previously at least are pretty far removed. My bracket before the playoffs started has the Rangers winning against the Blues, but I also had…

Has Selanne officially called it quits? I know it's probable, I just didn't hear anything official yet. But yeah, I totally see what you're saying with Doan now, especially in the restructuring sense. On one hand, they might damage the fan base they do have by dumping their captain, but on the other they might gain more by freshening up the roster a bit. The man does deserve to retire a champion. He's a hardworking player, the type that you can pretty much feel his heart beating every shift, and…

My mom abandoned me the minute I was born, and my dad raised me on his own. I saw the things he had to put up with as a man raising a daughter alone, and I'll fight until I'm blue in the face for men in the face of female-favoritism.

Yeah, you'll just sign Luongo or something with that money. ;) Then I'll have more reason to dislike Detroit. Nah, jk, they're pretty set with Howard. I think they'll continue being successful, especially with that cap savings, even if they lose Lidstrom I question whether or not Wings to the east would happen, too, because that's a pretty big move. It just seems to be the most heavily rumored for some reason. The alignment is pretty goofy (obviously, with the Jets in the southeast still) but it…

This doesn't really pertain to your comment directly, but sort of in the same vein- I'd like to say that this man was very respectful to a young woman. She was getting her prom dress altered, and she came out with it unzipped. Nothing at all exposed but a bare back, and the man turned his son's head around and made a point to divert his own eyes. He was definitely not an "I do nice things for women so they'd sleep with me" man, he was genuinely just a nice person.

There should only be one type of feminist. Like I said elsewhere- there's only one definition of feminism, but there are unfortunately plenty of activists who hide behind the term while practicing different ideals- the most prominent of which is the "women first" mentality. Unfortunately, that group has become interchangeable with, or probably louder than, real feminism (which is equal rights, not privileges). My best friend is in the real variety of feminism, wanting equality and not priority, …

I'm in the early childhood education field, and there was one male out of 8 of my previous classes, and he ended up dropping and switching majors two weeks into the semester. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with women choosing those fields (nursing, education, etc). Women are child-bearers and because of that are naturally nurturing and gentle. There's no arguing that women are biologically nurturing: just look at what happens to a new mother's breast when her baby (or even a stranger's bab…

I agree on all accounts. Taking the gender out of the title is important if you want to take the gender out of privilage/rights/whatever. I don't think we should be gender-blind (is that a thing? along the same lines as color/race-blind) but both sides need a fair balance. And you're absolutely right that fighting fire with fire is sometimes a necessary evil. You can't protect yourself against an extremist by being passive.

Edit: I started one thought and ended a different one, and it didn't make any sense. Which is exactly what happened to me when I brought up Steve and Joe.. haha. I didn't mean to imply that they fought, but that there was a respect among both teams for those two guys in general. Blood bath or not, Avs fans appreciate Stevie Y and Wings fans appreciate Sakic and that's what made the blood bath so much fun. Have you read the book by Adrian Dater, Blood Feud? Do you mean "the same thing" as a slip of the tongue? It's my understanding that a slip of the tongue means just a general error when speaking, while a freudian slip means substituting a word subconsciously which shows her true agenda. But at least we agree on the last part, she wants women to have priority and it's gross.

It really is a shame the rivalry hasn't lasted though the years. I'm sure a lot of it has to do with the league toning down on aggression, but also perhaps the way the Avs have sucked the last few seasons also helped the competition die a bit. There's no fun in beating a team who's already beaten themselves. It was a fun rivalry because even though there was so much hate, there was a ton of mutual respect. For example, I have never heard of an Avs fan who didn't respect Stevie Y, and likewise a …

Touche. Contradiction! I should have said that I support old-fashioned "men are masculine and women are feminine" ideas, but tasks and roles are flexible. I like the idea of the woman being the nurturer and the man being the bacon-bringer, but the details and tasks are interchangeable, as long as there's balance. Er, that probably sounds equally contradicting. I'll try to hammer out a better explanation.

IMO, while there's only one definition of feminism, there are plenty of activists who hide behind the term while practicing different ideals- the most prominent of which is the "women first" mentality. Unfortunately, that group has become interchangeable with, or probably louder than, real feminism (which is equal rights, not privileges). Exactly, it didn't bother me as much that she disapproved of my "acceptance" with the man, but it really got to me that she criticized him so harshly (and behind his back, no less. Hello professionalism?). I mean, he even had his young son with him. Even if she subscribed to the "women and children first" idea, wouldn't having a child on his lap give him some "right" to sit there?

Agree 1000%! As long as it's a fair balance, that's all that matters. I can change my oil while my man does the dishes. It's a symbiotic relationship, not a mirror.

I did take that into consideration, but she was young (~20s), and much more "americanized" than the heavily-accented stereotypical Asian you're thinking of (I'm sure that's not very politically correct, but hopefully you understand.. no offense intended). If I were to assume, I'd say her parents or possibly even grandparents were immigrants, and she was born here. And I'm all for classical gender roles as well. I believe men and women should exist in a symbiotic balance rather than with mirrored…

I definitely support classical gender roles. The man did gesture to ask if I wanted to go first, and since I had literally just walked in the door I'm sure he did it because it's chivalrous. I appreciated it, but I reciprocated with common courtesy and let him go first since he was waiting there first.

I couldn't believe she used the word "priority"! Women fight to have PRIORITY over men? I don't know if she genuinely meant it or it was a slip of the tongue/Freudian slip.

And I'm more of a men's rights activist than a feminist! I couldn't be further away from a feminist (edit- the "women-privilege" variety). I couldn't believe she was so outspoken like that. I was thinking: "Seriously? This is worth your time and elevated blood pressure?" Hell, if the situation was reversed, I would have given him the chair and let him go first because he had a small child with him. Just like I'd do the same for a woman with a small child with her.
