Based on my experience in retail (clothing, not books), it's the person who decides what goes where in the store in order to drive up sales. What skirts go next to what tops, what jeans go near what shirts, what's at the front of the store and what gets relegated to the back. I worked in NYC, so every store had an in-house merchandiser, but I know that a lot of smaller markets would have one regional merchandiser who was responsible for a number of stores, and if you weren't directly involved wi…

False rape accusations are bad because they reduce the credibility of true rape victims and because they destroy lives.. It doesn't have to be a dichotomy. The same can be said for unnecessary orders of protection.

False. It is considered Rape in the Second Degree per Article 130.30 of the New York Penal Code. To wit: A person is guilty of rape in the second degree when: 1. being eighteen years old or more, he or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person less than fifteen years old; or 2. he or she engages in sexual intercourse with another person who is incapable of consent by reason of being mentally disabled or mentally incapacitated. Rape in the second degree is a class D felony. You'll als…

Sweden's Riksbank confirmed on Tuesday that destroying currency is not illegal. Until 1980 there was a law that forbade the destruction of coins but this law is no longer in force. And KatZilla is above reading, apparently.

Well, at least this kid was let off. This story was posted in /r/libertarian a short while back. It's the only reason I remembered Chaplinsky and Cohen. And he's still being charged. edit: formatting.

Well, I am a lay person as well -- I took an undergraduate caselaw class on civil liberties. BUT...the way I understand it, Chaplinsky invoked a concept of "fighting words"...by calling someone a "goddamn fascist" (especially in 1942) to their face, it was essentially akin to disturbing the peace. Something about inciting a rational person to violence? Fuck the Draft, from Cohen, was clearly a political statement, and thus considered protected speech -- because they interpreted the intent of the…

According to the complaint, all was rosy for the next two years until a female transgender employee joined the group Bara worked for. Bara’s boss, a woman named Pam Sohn, allegedly made inappropriate comments about this woman, and ridiculed her sexual preference. Bara complained about the comments to Sohn, who Bara says turned on him and began to treat him, and the other men in the office unfairly. Seems like a case of one powertripping boss more than anything else.

He's right you know. Compare Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire to Cohen v. California. Calling someone a goddamned fascist: Unprotected. Wearing a jacket that says Fuck the Draft: Protected.

As I've said above, I think a lot of people are missing the point of this study. It's not to say that daterape drugs are a myth, just that their use is grossly exaggerated. Not being a British Journal of Criminology subscriber myself, I can't actually read the report, but as per legolas-the-elf above, based on two studies (here and here), actual cases are fairly low. To wit: This paper outlines the toxicology results from 1014 cases of claimed drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA) analysed at t…

Not a single person I know could tell where to get any GHB That's all well and good, but how many people do you know would actually try to get some for the purposes of date rape? Not a single person I know would know where to get heroin, but that doesn't mean it's not around. I think the point people are missing in this article is that it's not saying drinks don't get spiked, it's saying that that's not the main issue. Kind of like strangerdanger pedophilia: it exists, but a child's much more li…
