Couple of things. 1 you are married from the date you sign the paper until the day the gavel goes down 2 yes separation date has some meaning, but not what people here think 3 you are still married until the judge ends it. Ever divorce lawyer on the planet will tell you to not get a GF until after this is all done. Know what every guy runs out and does...? I'd have LOVED to stay at home with my son. Still would. Build model rockets, teach him, head to the park, etc. No, I got a nanny, maid, and a wife (that promptly quit her job). 17	Alimony is a joke and so is marriage Um, no. She gets the value that the assets appreciated during the time of the marriage. For example, bought a house for $500k before you knew her. Got married and during that time it went up by $500k (total $1m). She is "entitled" to 50% of that $500k. You get $750k and she gets $250k, which either means sell it or get a horrible new loan.
