Cushy STEM curriculum? Cushy STEM careers? STEM work is significantly harder than education or Administration degrees and careers. Few people want to put that much effort in, women especially don't want to work that hard. Trash pickup truck drivers are carefully avoided by women. The culture doesn't seem to reward women in that direction.

What I got from 63daddy's comment is that the coffee shop owner doesn't know which -ism that they are discriminating against. Arguably discrimination in all three categories, sex, race, and gender identity. Seems like an easy lawsuit to initiate but will be hard to collect any funds as this stuff will ruin the business model.

I've had incompetent engineers in every color and sexes. I never said all engineers were competent, only that they are the same levels of competency. Some are great and some are atrocious. We had a great structural engineer lady and a terrible industrial engineer lady. Color or gender does not make competency. Some folks are also cowards and refuse to take any risks or speak out on any subject.

For women in engineering, my observations are that white , black and Asian/Hispanic female engineers graduate and are hired just fine. Same levels of competency as any men. The minority women work, marry, have children and stay employed just like their male counterparts. The white female engineers work, marry, have children and quit, maybe to return after the kids are older than 13. Most don't return. PE license, MS degree, lousy or great skills don't matter. You are correct about the STEM difficulty and the changing of majors from my experience forty years ago. STEM problem solving is not taught well in high school. It shows in the graduation rates versus the admission rates. It's too bad. We need more quality engineers and the female engineers are as good as anyone else.

The predominant gender in the teaching profession is female, therefore the class assignments are geared to female biased learning techniques. Indoor, sitting, writing with a bit of group collaboration similar to primitive skills. Very little hands dirty, outdoor, problem solving assignments like in male dominated careers similar to primitive times.

And yet women make only 77% on the income that men make. So the educational gains are not becoming societal gains. Men work harder and longer at more difficult jobs and get compensated for it. The short hair standard comes from the end of world war I, when the soldiers had to shave and cut their hair to wear the gas masks in the trenches. The soldiers returned clean shaven and heroes, so they got laid and got good jobs and the non soldiers wanted to get laid and get good jobs so they shaved and cut their hair to match. Technically, she's correct. Lowering the standards to levels that all genders can achieve is gender equality. This doesn't mean this is good for the organization. Just that the metrics are equalized for the genders. The combat requirements haven't changed just the opportunity to win has changed. Lowering the standards limits winning. Hooray for equality.
