It's difficult for them to imagine that a man doesn't want to discard old lovers, he wants to keep them all and have a harem, because it's women who want to discard and trade up.

Really, she wants unlimited access to his resources. If she succeeds in that, then she has a slave as a byproduct, but no woman can love a man she has enslaved, and so she will perceive him as weak and her hypergamy instinct will kick in and she'll attempt to trade up.

There is that, but women will do whatever they need to to get a man, just for the sake of getting a man. Think of video games and roleplaying games. Those had always been the de-facto territory of males. Females never showed much interest.
