The fact that a place where men are not allowed is called a "safe space" implies that men in any space with a woman, trans or non binary person(s) is a dangerous space. It's pegging women, trans and non binary persons as victims or weak and perpetuates a notion that men are monsters. If this was a battered woman's shelter I could understand the no men allowed policy, but it's a bike shop. The bike co-op used to be closed during those hours, but is now only open during that time so they can run the "Women, Trans, Non-Binary Gender" program. The percentage of men who are homeless, however, pales in comparison to the percentage of trans people who are homeless. When considering marginalization, I think it's important to look at the per capita statistics regarding groups of people. It discriminates against men so that people who may feel uncomfortable around men or people who never get to have a space for themselves because of men can FINALLY--for a couple hours a week/4% of their opening hours at a not-for-profit, volunteer-based community organisation that is not a retail space--have a space for them. Some people are getting offended because they refuse to understand why this program at a volunteer-run, not-for-profit community organization (I.e. the coop is not a retail store) is running or why it holds the stipulations that it does. It's so persons who are women, trans or gender non-binary can feel comfortable in a space that is specifically for them, which is extremely uncommon. If you have had awkward (or even unpleasant) experiences because of who you are, then perhaps you may be able to relate better to how the people attending this program may feel. You get to feel like you belong almost anywhere you go in Canada, but maybe you feel slightly awkward if you're visiting Montreal and don't speak any French.
