The concepts of society or community depend on people not having tally and file every interaction to ensure they're getting back every ounce that they put in. Things come at you sideways, and you have to be okay with sending them out the same way, be okay giving without thought of reward the way one would toward their own family, only it more deliberate ways. 3	I. Am. Stuck. This might not help but having kids is losing yourself, because you're giving it away to someone else. You're gonna have to be at peace with at least a little bit of loss. The sacrifice involved in having kids is part of what can make it worthwhile though. As for how to retain what is left of your 'self', just keep introducing yourself and you kids to new things. If nothing else it's merely a broad generalization and cannot be applied on a case-by-case basis.
