There has actually been some studies that suggests that psychopath's can feel empathy, if they choose to. Almost like a switch. I do not have an opinion on the matter either way since there seems to be so much conflicting information out there. What you say about it being on a scale makes sense though. The amount of traits I share with psychopath's is concerning, but in my opinion that can all be explained by narcissism and Machiavellian traits.

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly so I will try to explain using an example. I can be in a conversation and I can somehow sense what another person is feeling, but I do not feel that emotion myself. This is 90% of the time. The other 10% I would experience it almost physically. This does not happen often, and is most often triggered by emotional pain and not physical pain (if that makes sense).
