I think it depends on where the money is coming from. I think that government issued scholarships should be 100% merit. However, in this case a private benefactor is the party that provided the stipulation and I think that's okay. It gets to be a gray area with corporate funded scholarships. In any case, there's the ideological and then there's the real world, and you have to decide for yourself if you want to be paying off loan money for years which someone else is willing to front for you. It's all good, and I agree with you in terms of scholarships paid for by tax dollars.. it gets less clear with corporate and especially private donations. You could say a white male donating specifically to a white male is racist and only looking out for his own, but you could also argue that it's still better than not donating $30 grand to fund a strangers education.
