Monogamy is not required in Christianity. Many of the biblical heroes had multiple wives. Monagamy became tied with Christianity more due to influence from Roman culture.

A number of Modern Hunter gatherers are serial mongomists, like the hadza, and encourage women to choose one man to have children with. The relationship lasts until the child is about 7. So yeah, even Hunter gatherers find monogamy useful or preferable for some reason.
