You could consider volunteer work. I prefer with international nonprofits - helping people & getting exposure to international cultures is a very fulfilling hobby of mine. And there are some where you can do a week at a time - important for those of us with limited vacation time from day jobs. To date I've volunteered with one group in 4 different Latin American countries, each for a week at a time, spaced out over a year or so.
