Just a observation: when you said that we can't fake self-confidence, I remembered about Amy Cuddy's quote: "Fake it until you make it!". Even if you're scared as fuck, YOU HAVE TO FAKE IT TO YOURSELF AND DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE. At some point, thins will get easier.
