Same reason mods on lots of smallish subs don't remove questionable stuff: if they did the sub would seem stagnant. When you only get a few posts a day it sucks to delete half of them.

I see the parallels, but a bouncer at a bar is also outnumbered by those they must control and must frequently deal with fights. Ditto for a camp counselor, or the guy who runs the homeless shelter. We don't extend this special legal protection to just anyone who is outnumbered by their charges. I thought we gave that extra protection to police and corrections officers because they encounter dangerous criminals way more frequently than most people - a criterion that teachers don't really fit. Bu…

She absolutely should be expelled and charged, but I don't understand why it becomes a felony because the victim was a teacher.

That's not what it looks like at all. It says Prosecutors drop sex assault charge in giant letters above his picture.

That's not true at all. Prosecutors have discretion, they are not obligated to pursue every case the police bring them. They often have more cases than they can handle, requiring them to prioritize the important ones, plead down the less important ones, and dismiss the ones they think are unwinnable. Not to mention, District Attorneys are often elected (in this case it would be the Solicitor for Charleston County, who is also elected). So numbers do matter to them because they want to look good …

Perhaps, but I think the fact that 'victim' was a minor would have been included in the charges filed, and the newspaper would have included that fact in the original article about the arrest. In most cases the police will not release the name of the accuser when they drop sex crime charges, regardless of age. They don't want to open the victim up to retaliation, especially since often they're dropping charges because they're not sure the accused is guilty (rather than sure they are innocent). B…

I agree her name should also be published, but if no one has released her name there's nothing for the newspaper to publish. It's not as though they didn't even bother.

Well, to be fair, after they published the first article about his arrest it would have been worse not to write another story when the charges were dismissed. At least they're giving the same publicity to the dismissal that they did to the accusation. And AFAIK the name of the accuser remains unknown. The police have not released it, and will not unless they decide to charge her with something (unlikely). At this point Burnside himself could tell people, but so far has not.

Yeah either way it's fucked up. IMO it looked like she knew she was going to get hit and just didn't give a shit, either because she was high or because she was hoping to get him arrested or beat up by bystanders.

I dunno, I've seen videos where a man gets all up in a bigger man's face screaming, "Do something!" and is surprised to end up on his ass. I've also seen cases where people of both genders purposely taunt someone into hitting them in an attempt to bring others to their defense, get the person charged with assault, use it against them in a custody hearing, etc. There's plenty of other (also horrible) reasons she might have done it even knowing that ass-whooping was a possibility.

I know I'm three days late, but I don't see how this is a pussy pass at all. She was cocky and thought she could fight a marine and she was wrong, I don't see her trying to use her gender as a handicap or excuse.

If you decide to stop pursuing her, then you've closed it. How does telling her about your decision change anything? To me it seems like burning bridges just for the sake of burning bridges.

The reason why I tell girls who reject me that I don't want to do anything with them anymore is because I like having closure. I don't like leaving a loose end and thinking about a girl for weeks whether I'm going to ask her out or not. She rejects me, it's over and I want to move on. I don't get this. Why can't you just decide that you aren't going to ask her out again and leave it at that? What is it about the act of telling her about your decision that helps you move on?

Yes, it is! Perhaps it would be nice if no one felt fear of rejection, but in reality most people do. It is hard to make yourself completely vulnerable in that way.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
