Definitely this. As a woman this has always felt the easiest and most natural to me, especially if accompanied by teasing/flirting during normal conversation from both parties. The longer it goes on, the more the tension builds. If they withdraw then you back off and ramp up a bit more slowly with the touching, they’ll usually make it pretty physically clear what they’re comfortable with.

What about the reverse situation, as a woman? Do I go about it the exact same way, try and flirt with them, maybe get their number/socials, and ask them out if they seem responsive to that?

Question: how can you ask out or hook up with people from partner dance classes without making things awkward? If things go awry, wouldn't it be kind of rough having to see and dance with the same person every week?

Just curious, rejection messages are always going to be a little uncomfortable, but ideally, what could a girl say to make it as seamless as possible? Is something like "Hey I appreciate your time but I wasn't really feeling a connection" really any better than not hearing anything being on the receiving end?

This is it. If someone doesn't make a strong impression, I often lose track of them. I simply don't have the time or energy to reply to and go on dates with every guy, so I have to be selective about where to direct my energy.

What OP did was great. If you are both regulars you will probably see her often around the same time, so use this. I talk to other gym regulars all the time. Some safe conversation starters can include complimenting her lifts (specifically something NOT related to her physical appearance), asking to work in if she’s using a piece of equipment you need, or maybe gently poking fun at something dumb that happens around you (people screaming loudly or singing aloud for example, which seems to happen…

When girls say that they go to the gym to workout and not be bothered by creeps, they mean they don’t want to be explicitly hit on, given unsolicited advice, or talked down to/patronized. You did none of these things, which makes you not a creep. It’s totally fine to have a normal friendly conversation with girls at the gym, which is what you did. As a woman who regularly spends a lot of time lifting, I think that building rapport with no expectations before asking out a woman at the gym out is …
