During the Great Recession I carried debt because my then GF lost her job as an editor and it was impossible to find a new job right then (She got to interviews and ended up losing out to people with PhDs looking at entry level jobs because of the market) and I was making all of $38k essentially covering living expenses. IIRC, my house it's worth about $100k of the $390k mortgage cost. In Denver, attaching to the water main is a $30k proposition. Just to get water to your place.
