As for the 'how's it goin part'. I would disagree a bit. Personally when I ask someone that question I try to be genuinely interested in the response. The response- I guess some people 'lie' but most people aren't willing to tell a coworker/acquaintance the true details of their inner conscience. Most of the time like you said though both parties sort of shuffle through it as a greeting with canned responses. "How's it goin?" I feel ya man, I've felt kinda in the same boat though I'm a bit younger than you are (21). If you aren't shown what it is to love and be loved as a child, like anything else, it will be a bit more difficult to learn when you get older. This is kind of obvious but I wouldn't lie, especially for someone like this guy who probably isn't used to dealing with people too much. What happens when you do actually get to know a nice girl and she finds out you were just bullshitting her the whole time?

To me it would seem anyone going around asking random people to eat with him is a little desperate for social interaction
