I strongly doubt this was written by a woman. Also, why are you Facebook friends with these idiots? Edit: I stand corrected. She doesn't seem to be a feminist though.

Benevolent sexism.

I dunno about the rest of you, but I still feel completely obligated to be chivalrous. It seems more like women want both equal opportunity in society and special treatment by men.

I think it would be a good idea to try to start Men's Rights Groups at colleges, or try to get Op Eds printed in some of the bigger papers. I'm honestly not sure what to do. That's why I came here to ask. As far as what we should be doing here? Linking to articles and blog posts which demonstrate how the institutions we're supposed to rely and to which we're subject on don't treat us equally. Linking to articles that show us how to act, and what we cant d to try to get these problems addressed. …

Feminism is not the reason for these problems. Sexism against men is the reason for these problems. Feminists didn't invent misandry.

You won't reduce that power by complaint about the, here. You'll reduce that power by coming up with an effective way to communicate why the way we're being treated is unfair. That's what they do. That's what works.

This should be at the top. Imagine if the feminist boards posted videos of men abusing women and acted as though it was substantive content.

The top rated comments in here really speak to how much better and more intellectual honest this place is getting.

I always thought that Destiny's Child's "independent woman" shtick was a reaction to all the criticism they got for "Bills Bills Bills".

I would love to know where they're meeting these girls. I've dated loads of girls and the vast majority have been kind, supportive, funny, smart, engaging people. If you're dating what I refer to as "Snookis" (the gender-opposite of douchebags, girls who are vapid, shallow, reality tv-watching, top forty-listening ugg-wearing people with no character, curiosity, and no interests besides self-asorbtion) than you deserve to get the run-around.

No she's right. And women are greedy and just want us to get them pregnant and take care of them.

I completely agree with this.

How exactly was it poorly worded? How could you mistake the word 'art' for anything other than art in general? I consider entertainment to be art, and I think entertainment can convey just as much nuance and breadth as anything else.

I don't mean individual pieces of art. I mean all of art.

Fiction is not didactic. It is not a political statement. It can be, but at it's core, it isn't. Fiction is meant to entertain. I don't think it's fair to box fiction in like that. Fiction is meant to portray the human experience. That's about as far as I would go with what fiction is meant to be. If you want to actively work against something, start by creating it yourself or supporting those that are already doing so, rather than telling others to change the way they write. I do, I am, and I a…

I didn't say not having one is wrong. It would be better to have a a female character who is as unconventionally appealing as Jonah Hex (as long as we're talking about the Gray/Palmotti version of the charater). Maybe I shouldn't stand by this argument, though. There IS a female version of Jonah Hex in the newer series, and she's deformed but not SO deformed as to make her sexually unappealing which further supports my point. Yes, I think we should've actively work against trying to make every f…

It doesn't have to. But it would be better if it did. Art should be broad in scope. It should convey a large breadth of human experience.

Why? Can you explain why? So that women don't have it constantly drilled into their heads that all that matter is how sexy they are. So that they get the impression that women can be more than just hot. Why should a game have to constantly have all things equal? Does this mean we need to have a representative of every race in the game? Do we need to have a character from every country? Do we need a gay, bisexual, lesbian, and transgender character as well? Equality isn't really the point. No, yo…

All of this is correct. All I'm pointing out and advocating is that I think it'd be cool and it might make women a little less insecure about themselves if they were to see a female George Costanza here and there. I'm not saying we have to do away with the beautiful people, but the representation of "non-beautiful" women should be equal to that of "non-beautiful" men.

It's not the only reason, though. There are plenty of reasons that sexual stimulation is good. He simply didn't list them. Okay. Well, I'm just saying that the one he listed is fallacious. Are you sure you want to use this word? I can provide lots of counter-examples, if you like. There are plenty of strong female lead characters in comics and other media that aren't hyper sexualized. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Sword_(comics) Hah. Love that book. I love Girls too. Fantastic stuff. This doe…

It would be if the only reason given was, "It's natural." Wasn't that implied when DarkGamer said: "We're programmed to want to see it." ? There are many other reasons (most of them unstated in DarkGamer's post) for refusing to cry foul about sexualization. Sex (assuming it is safe, consensual, and not manipulative) really is a good thing, and we see new research to support that all the time. The complaint is not that women are sexualized. The complaint is that women are always sexualized. Just …

I think this mostly has to do with market forces. The primary consumers of fighting games like street fighter are young men, who appreciate female sexualization. Where women comprise the target demographic they are catered to and men are more sexualized (romance novels, diet cola ads.) You're correct. But I would argue that the default presumption in the media is that a male gaze is going to be taking in what's being produced, so the male gaze is catered to the vast majority of the time. That's …

Isn't this a naturalistic fallacy? Just because we're programmed to do something doesn't necessarily mean that we should do it whenever we like. Our morality does not align with our nature. Very often we contrive it so that it contradicts what are our naturally destructive impulses. I agree with you on the notion that there is nothing wrong with sexual objectification. It's necessary for attraction and sex. The problem is that the majority of representations of women in popular media are geared …

Yes, I can. Women on average have much less physical strength than men do. Where's the break in logic?

Just playing devil's advocate, tell me if there's an error in my thinking. Isn't it more likely that they're saving the women and children first because they're less able to help themselves because of a lack of physical strength?

You're claiming that women aren't really interested in a man's financial situation and that to think otherwise would be stereotyping women. I agree, it is a stereotype. I'm generalizing based on what I've experienced with women. I think this stereotype is based on truth, as I've known many women who have complained about their boyfriend's lack of a job, lack of money, lack of ambition etc. and read a bazillion articles on this topic written by women who lament the state of today's men -- ie. men…

Interestingly, I don't think I know a single guy who would turn down an attractive woman because she lives with and is dependent on her parents. In fact, a few of my friends are dating women in that exact situation.
