Is the silence after a response really that uncommon? I remember hearing about it in an Intro to Psychology class, apparently it's commonly used by psychologists, cops, etc to elicit additional information. The idea is people become uncomfortable and continue to talk to fill the awkward silence. I've noticed girls try this on me in the past. I tend to keep lessons I learned from Robert Cialdini in the back of my mind in any social interaction. My first quarter in college I took a psychology class which led to purchasing one of his books as reference for a paper. I sold the book for the class, but kept his book as reference. I'm not surprised to see him referenced here so many years later.
