In the context of the book, Portia (protagonist) has fallen in love with a cruel boy named Eddie. Portia is unreticent about her love and Eddie uses this as an opportunity for heartbreak. I think the aforementioned quote is a line of dialogue delivered from Eddie to Portia. In that sense it's similar to a spinner's carelessness toward his plate's affection.

Korean schools are pretty crazy. What the article said was accurate; high school students often wake up early and finish in the late afternoon. Most parents also enroll their children in cram schools. When students leave their high school they go to a cram school (Hagwon) for the remainder of the evening and don't come home until 1-3 AM; they make up lost sleep in class and inter-class periods. Korean parents have this weird adverse notion of sleep affecting their children's academic performance…
