Is this for real? Read up on the legal definitions of extortion and blackmail. And you just admitted to it on the internet.

Yes it is possible to be friends after you divorce. How close depends on many things, including who else each of you has in your life. Take some time to take care of and heal yourself. Depression tends to come back, so figure out what you are depressing. If you can, be amicable in how you split up. But you will have to see how you feel about her being affectionate with another man, and it sounds like you may get an opportunity to experience that sooner rather than later. You might find it easier…

My ex and I wanted to hire a single mediator, but were told to each hire a lawyer who works as a mediator, which we did. Key is for both to take a mediation approach. Split assets and liabilities 50-50 (except for separate property) and agreed to pay for future liabilities proportional to our incomes as they change over time. (So if she makes twice what I make, she pays 67% and I pay 33%; then if one of us loses our job or gets a raise, we readjust the percentages.) Smooth process and not very e…

That’s exactly what we are going for. It’s working for us. I hope it works for you too.

OP, this is definitely the case for my ex and me. Separated years ago and now divorced for 6 years. We coparent our kids on a friendly basis, sharing expenses based on respective incomes. Had Thanksgiving together with her partner’s kids as well as ours: one big expanded family. And I cannot overemphasize how important this is to our kids.

Are you forgetting about the kids?! They need to co-parent, for the kids’ sake.

I would recommend using lawyers — find ones who hold themselves out as mediators if you want a more amicable divorce. You can also Google “California Marital Settlement Agreement”. I found a sample form on the www.courts.ca.gov website that will give you an idea of the kinds of things you need to agree on. Good luck!

Have you tried EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy) tor the PTSD? Sounds strange to me but my daughter works with therapists and has seen some amazing results from it. Might be worth looking into.

Sounds to me like you want to try to make the relationship work. (“She honestly is my best friend” and “we love each other but are not in love with each other” are not the words of someone desperate to find the exit but afraid of what he will encounter on the other side.) If she wants to try as well (which you only find out by talking about it and then seeing if actions match words), you might try couples therapy (again?). The problem is breaking bad patterns of interacting that you both probabl…

Amicable divorce is possible; I’m not sure divorce without a lawyer is, though. Both my ex and I are lawyers and we considered hiring a single mediator, but the ones I spoke with said there is an inherent conflict of interest in “representing” both sides and they wouldn’t do it. So ex and I each hired lawyers who held themselves out as mediators and did a lot of the work ourselves to keep expenses down. There is a lot to consider, even in a friendly divorce, and it is good to have someone helpin…

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
