I recommend Dream Yoga by Andrew Holecek. It's an excellent primer on Tibetan yogas of the night, and western thought on lucid dreaming. When we meditate, we're not just relaxing, we're actually unlearning behaviors that have been whipped into us all of our life. Meditating while dreaming is like day-practice, but on steroids; nevertheless, you spend 1/3 of your life asleep, why not make it productive?

Yeah, I've actually considered going on a Vipassana retreat. I've been on a "loving and kindness" retreat before and it's really hard to describe how much retreats can influence your practice. I recommend you go, though don't be surprised if you face something you didn't expect to see. You'll let yourself know yourself, and that can be scary for some people. Good luck.

I can't say I've done sleep meditation because I'm simply not at that level of experience, but I recommend googling Dream Yoga and Sleep Yoga. It's insane. You also make a great point though, meditation isn't limited to sitting or standing. I practice mindful walking everyday to class.
