I don't go for extremely high value men, Don't beat yourself up. It is you that will define how valuable a man is.

Had we adopted a random child from our country (we're in Spain), do you think his views would still hold? I haven't had this line of discussion with him, as he doesn't usually engage in hypothetical discussions on emotional topics.

High value men don’t want to raise another man’s child. My husband and I are raising his niece. I wouldn't (and neither would any of you) consider him low-value. A couple we know after we adopted her asked him why he did so. His response was that every child deserves a functional set of parents and we are in a better position financially to raise her than my in-laws are. What I think you should have said (and probably meant to) is that a high value man doesn't want to raise a child without think…

Knowing damn well what he was doing. I think my FiL is losing his superego's ability to keep his id in check. My father did the same towards the end of his life. For example, when he met my now-husband, the very 1st thing he asked him was why was he so short. Fortunately, hubby is well-versed in the rough-and-tumble of guys talking, but still... no "how are you?", "can I get you a glass of water?", "how do you know my child?"

I honestly think husband overreacted. How is my husband's autism relevant in any way, shape, or form? He's overcome it, for the most part.

We're almost 40 and have 1 child. I have 5 siblings myself and he has 2. He wants to put our kids in boarding school, which is about 40k/year, so we're thinking one is fine.

[Assuming DH is D-something Husband, if not, please enlighten me and ignore the rest of this comment] Husband and I are in a similar situation. However, unlike your husband, we got lucky in employment, so neither of us are working until our daughter is older. I floated the idea of a part-time job for him, which he shot down, saying that work has a way of expanding to fill all available time and he wants to see daughter grow up. We have enough savings to last us 7-8 years comfortably.

Do you trust your partner? I do now. Did you always trust them? Initially, I didn't. But, as I've written here before, he went above and beyond any reasonable expectation by taking me to London for the Olympics in 2012 as our 3rd date and not leaving me when I found a lump on my breast a few days after the closing ceremony. How do you work on trusting your partner more? What are some things you do to help you when you're feeling uncertain/insecure/worried? Are there areas where you feel more or …

We all have our battles. It depends on what said battles motivate us to do. The contrast is that my husband's cousin's depression motivated him to commit suicide. My cancer experience motivated me to focus on oncology. The choice is ours and ours alone.

It's not only myself -- my mother in law has a recurring brain tumour and my sister has diabetes. While the last isn't related, that's what initially drew me to medicine.

he didn't see it as a chore, but the norm. I've asked him why a few times he gave a toss about me even though I was sick. Each time, he said it was his idea to take me to the Olympics. And he saw it as his duty to get me back to where we started in as good form as we had left.

Yes, I was very scared that he'd leave me during my cancer treatment and recovery. But, he checked out every book on the condition at the library, wrote personal letters to the best cancer doctors in the world, and held my hand, reassuring me that this wouldn't be the end. He'd give his 2 cents regarding my treatment to the doctors often, and usually correctly. Visiting hours started at 7:30 at the hospital. He was the first one at the door and the last to leave. I never knew a man so dedicated.…

His mind, if that counts. If not, his eyes -- dark, piercing, Maghrebi/Levantine. If he takes one strong gaze at me, I feel the look can undress me and make me fall like putty.

I'm lSquaredD1, 38, married, breast-cancer survivor and a oncology PhD recipient as a result -- my experience plus the support of then-bf-now-husband gave me the motivation to write and defend my thesis. After all that, we got married, adopted a daughter -- his niece -- and now, I'm a SAHM, along with my SAHH, till daughter starts schooling. We live in Spain, but we're not Spanish -- I'm from the Philippines and he's Dutch.

Husband's hair is straight, but with a great deal of body, if that makes sense. I love it and I wish I had it. sniff His brother jokes that my newborn niece will be bald before either of them are.

Given that my situation is such that we're both stay-at-home parents and our daughter is always with us everywhere we go, this situation wouldn't arise. But, hypothetically, I'd probably pick up some kaopectate or equivalent for him.

have postgraduate degrees, working in white collar jobs with middle to upper middle class salaries, I check all of these boxes -- PhD in Oncology, worked for Genentech and commanded a standard salary for that position in Silicon Valley. There are only so many men more accomplished than I. My husband isn't as accomplished in some ways (I think his GRE score was lower than mine, and he never took the SAT), and more in others (he was a venture capitalist in Silicon Valley, did aircraft maintenance …

Ummm... My husband and I class ourselves as feminists. Feminism to me just means that I have the option to do anything he can do (or you can) and vice versa. Is there anything wrong with that?

Both husband and I have PhDs in STEM. Instead of homeschooling our 2-year old daughter, we're thinking of sending her to boarding school a couple of hours away. He went to boarding school and it made him so much more mature and socially adept than the other guys I dated. Being an alum also opened doors for him -- including to our wedding venue, etc.

contact with exes I'd watch more for interaction with exes than mere contact. When we moved to Spain, we didn't know anyone other than his first girlfriend who was here half the week and away the other half -- air hostess. So, he introduced me to her and I find that, as I get to know her better, it validates my impression of his being an excellent judge of character. We get together with she and her friends every other week for various social activities. I honestly beginning to think of her as a…

My boyfriend and I have been dating for 2 years and living together for 1. We're both 30 years old right now. We've been discussing marriage for almost a year and he has told me he plans to propose sometime in 2018. I have no reason to think that he won't propose, but I suppose this whole process is taking longer than I imagined and it's making me nag and become anxious. We looked at rings together 6 months ago but he told me he hasn't yet picked out a ring yet. Mr lSquaredD1 took me ring shoppi…

my boyfriend suffers from the "Winter Blues". The medical term for this is seasonal affective disorder and all humans suffer from (some form of) it. I started thinking that Mr. lSquaredD1 was marriage-material when, upon his team getting laid off and him being at his lowest point career-wise -- he was pursuing a PhD while working, I still remember the conversation, like it was yesterday: Me: hi, just having lunch, saw you sign on, are you home early? Him: Yea, the team got pink slips this morning, so... Me: OMG... I'm so sorry to hear that. What will you do? Him: Well, the olympics start in a couple of weeks, and my buddy's involved in the b…

Is there some truth to this or am I blatantly wrong? Is there anyone here who gave up a high income to SAH? I do believe that if you can get by on one income (or no income for a bit), it's good to be SAH. In our case, husband worked in venture capital and I was doing cancer research -- both making well over $160k/year -- saved a little and are now both taking off work to relax and recuperate.

Both husband and I have PhDs. We've decided to synchronize our lives. Hence, he and I both worked hard a number of years and now both are taking some time off, living abroad -- he's not American whereas I am, helping to raise his niece in preparation for having a kid of our own (or not, we may just adopt her as our own, his sister shows no inclination towards wanting her back).

hello, do you hear yourself? Do you hear what you want from him? I suspect she wants her man to read her mind. To which, I'll ask, can you read his mind all the time with certainty? Men have worse non-verbal intuition than women -- https://www.livescience.com/4876-clueless-guys-read-women.html. Some, like my husband, have Aspergers, making it even more difficult. I didn't consider the rapist angle, but it's an enlightening way to see his behaviour. Maybe it isn't his diagnosed Aspergers, it is f…

How much influence does your boyfriend/husband have when it comes to your wardrobe? Nothing overt. He doesn't say "/u/lSquaredD1, I think you ought to wear the black dress today", but I do know what he likes. I strive to make him happy. Do you ask him for suggestions, does he give them yourself or is he even choosing an outfit for you on some days? Haha... I asked him once. He said, "I don't care what you wear outside home". And, that's where things stand with us. What if he does not like certai…

Success in relationships requires both sides having a mix of alpha and beta traits. My husband did break down and cry when his cousin committed suicide last June. Now you will not meet a more Stoic man than Mr lSquaredD1, but even his stoicism isn't limitless. Likewise, my state of being a "surrendered wife" has its limits. While he cried, I invited some of his longtime friends over to comfort him. It worked and my Stoic, emotional-rock is back in my life, good as ever. He gives me emotional sta…

My boyfriend-turned-husband told me this our 3rd date, when he took me to the 2012 Olympics in London. I told him that this was early to make this sort of statement, but now he's my husband. We may go to the beaches of Zanzibar. Ok, we will -- he just bought our tickets and booked our hotel room. The sand is apparently white over there and they speak Arabic, which the husband also does, so we'll both be happy.
