Even if she had taken out the loan during the marriage, you probably would not be on the hook for it. But in your case she took out the loan before the marriage. So it’s a pre-marital debt. I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

Based on you description, no, you should not have any liability for your wife’s student loans following divorce, unless you co-signed her loans. In California, student loans are generally not apportioned to the non-debtor spouse in the context of divorce. In fact, if you have paid down any of your wife’s student loans with your wages/salary or anything else that could be considered “marital property,” you might be able to seek some reimbursement from your wife.
