Your brain can also tell you that people who aren't there are talking to you or give you hallucinations. That doesn't make them real. Your gender is determined by your chromosomes. That doesn't mean I don't empathize with people who feel they are the wrong gender, but it's disingenuous to tell them they are right in the same way it would be disingenuous to tell the schizophrenic that the toaster really will kill him.
