It's so stressful trying to follow your gut these days when so many people are making it their jobs to shoot you down. We had a terrible time with bed rails, so we put the mattress right on the floor. Until that point I was stuffing a body pillow under the flat sheet to create a bumper. Now that Kidlet is walking and climbing we got a small 6" tall frame to put the mattress on. So much luck and sound sleep to you guys! I hope you find a comfortable solution 😊

Does he stay asleep if you try to wiggle away once he's in actual deep sleep? Unless I'm out of the house, my son won't fall asleep without me. It's natural, biology tells these little humans to be sure the caretaker is nearby, and if not, set the alarm off. Some are more sensitive than others. There's lots of debate about CIO and whether it is harmful or not. I personally was convinced by studies (long gone from my browser history now) showing that baby's cortisol rises during crying that does …

Yes! This is fantastic. I feel like this is frowned upon these days. I met my husband when I was 16 and both of our parents were getting nervous when we hit the 2 year mark. My mom flat out told me she had never witnessed high school sweethearts working out before. I, like you, knew I had found something special. When it works, it works. As long as both parties have similar visions of the future it's totally worth working through the awkward self-discovery years together.

Congratulations! This is such a special time. I hope everything went as smoothly as possible and you are basking in love and teeny tiny baby noises. I'll add that the overwhelming "what kind of world are we living in" feelings become less powerful, but you may (I did and several I've questioned, anyway) have new and unexpected reactions to the suffering of others, even bugs. Ask your mom friends/family questions. I always feel so honored when I'm asked, even about poop colors, locchia, nipples, …

I love how you've put this into words! "Doing battle" is a great way to think of this. In fifteen seconds of reading, my perception of my own supporting role has been changed. Thank you for this post.

That food sounds amazing! I never worked up the give-a-damns to make food ahead. We just thoroughly mashed whatever we were eating and shared. Kidlet definitely likes broth in a cup though. Biting: could be a sign that he's done nursing for that session and starting to play around instead, especially if he doesn't seem upset that you've pulled him off when he does it. Siblings: I don't think there's any truth to that. My close friends have three. The first two are girls and were very easy. Their…

You've all already made a ton of great points. My first thought was: professional/educational stuff is more important than having a caring partner that makes you happy and supports all those other goals? All I truly want in life is to be happy and emotionally fulfilled. I never found either of those in the workplace, so I guess I'm done achieving anything in this life. I guess I'm officially a crotchety old lady; kids these days!

Sardine salad?! Do you just sub it in instead of tuna, or do you have a separate recipe? I would love to eat more sardines.

Ah! Isn't it amazing? I just moved to a house last week and it came with a giant raised bed. I've never been so happy to do weeding. Did you plant slicing cucumbers, or do you plan to pickle? I still remember my first homegrown tomato from 9 years ago... The summer of bruschetta.

Tent all the way. I love the sound of rain on it, the fresh air all night, and birds. We are thinking of putting a tiny cabin with a loft at our family property though for winter visits.

This is fantastic! Thank you so much for sharing. Summer is my favorite season by far because of camping and the simple living that goes with. While at home we keep our comfy lounge chairs easily accessible so we can enjoy the late afternoon sun and meals outside as often as possible. I'm trying to keep fresh fruit chopped up in the fridge so we have summery snacks on hand or garnish for drinks on the patio. Dinners are simple; usually meat on the BBQ and a salad or grilled zucchini on the side.…

If you're able, consider visiting a certified lactation consultant rather than the midwives (if there's such a profession in your area). I believe that if you're actually getting a good latch it should be getting noticeably less painful. Perhaps also consider having baby checked for minor tongue/lip tie.

I've suffered migraines for seventeen years. I had an unmedicated birth. I would take twelve hours of labor over a six hour headache any day. I think since you're familiar with pain it will help. Also, labor is pain with a definite purpose and a (mostly) known outcome. Knowing that was immensely helpful in my opinion. Plus, you usually forget how painful it was fairly quickly.

I noticed this during my unmedicated birth as well. I'd also been doing guided meditations and deep breathing exercises throughout pregnancy.

Wow. Great thread! I've been with my husband since we were in high school, but I did have some prerequisites. No smoking - Dad smoked, it's disgusting and dangerous. Married parents - ALL my friends were children of divorce and they had no comprehension of real loving relationships. I have a loving, functional example of parents and wanted that for a partner. No yelling- my parents, while very loving, would yell during arguments. I've never yelled or raised my voice to my husband and he's never …

We always make double at dinner, so lunch is always leftovers. Snack is plain Greek yogurt with blueberries and maple syrup or a homemade smoothie. Husband has a six-pack cooler that is just the right size for our Pyrex containers. I prepare everything the night before And set it together in the fridge. He just has to slide it into his cooler and toss an ice pack on top. Sometimes I'll sneak a fancy chocolate or his favorite candy inside. If I know it's going to be a crazy long day I add a note …

For example, when he tickles you, anywhere non-sexual, say "you missed!" Or "colder"/"warmer" to guide him wherever sounds good.

Without knowing anything about his personality, I'd say there's a good chance that his playfulness is a form of initiating. At the very least, those are times when he is feeling light-hearted and low stress, which makes becoming aroused that much easier. Take those times and try gently turning the roughhousing into something more sexual. That's exactly the way my husband would behave in our early days (late teens/early twenties). Also, exams + work load is definitely a way to stamp out the sex d…

Tread when caution regarding friendship. Just be sure that the reasons you stopped the romance are ok traits for a friend. And be sure to reconsider friendship at the first sign of bitterness or unsupportive behavior.

Attached at the hip, and have been since high school 17 years ago. We bonded in high school over music and camping/backpacking, then started dating a year later and moved in together 5 years in. As we matured we were very lucky to expand into new hobbies together instead of apart. We both enjoy the same author, same strange music (though we both have separate favorites), camping/backpacking, hunting, TV shows. He works 40-50/week and I'm a SAHM to a 19mo old. Primal Moms Look Good Naked. It covers nutrition before, during AND after with the intent of healthy baby and a mom that doesn't look like a mom. It's written from an ancestral/paleo viewpoint, but won't not be off-putting to those who don't adhere to that lifestyle. Fertility is taken very seriously in "primitive" cultures and this incorporates that kind of food wisdom.

I am personally more likely to experience anxious, depressing, and jealous thoughts with hormone fluctuations. Tracking my mood closely while charting my mensual cycles helped me discover this. Your hormone levels aren't always going to be the same month to month in relation to each other. Things like stress and even food affect how much of each is made. Now, 90% of the time I can stop and realize that I'm not really feeling a terrible feeling for a valid reason. Rather, I'm not handling it logi…

When I need a bunch of garlic peeled, I chop the root ends off and Todd then into a sealed Tupperware. Shake like mad for ten seconds and they've peeled themselves and I don't have any stuck under my nails. Love the dishwasher trick! Luckily mine says "clean" on the front when done and has a delay start. I load it throughout the day and set it to run overnight. We live for a nice, protein-rich breakfast. Stick with nursing camisoles as long as you can. Personally, my size fluctuated so much in the first three whole months that all of my nursing bras became irrelevant. Maybe related, but didn't get any blocked ducts after staying with camisoles... My midwife told me that squats are a more natural, and therefore better, way to get your pelvic floor in shape rather than Kegels. Squats also soothed our fussy baby. So many random squirts: car roof, window, my own face, cat. That let down can be quite…

Yesss! Babies. 18 month old now and I'm really starting to feel ready for the next round. It sounds like you're doing a fantastic job over there 😀 Oh the importance of letting Dad just be Dad. Try reminding him of compliments he's received from other people, especially regarding skills required for his work. Remind him of a project at work he kicked ass at. That could be helpful to jog his memory before an interview. Type/print extra copies of resume and references so he has them ready without the fuss. Stash an extra tie or dress shirt in his car in case he spills coffee on the way to an interview. This isn't necessarily confidence-boosting, but definitely a stress saver on the day o…

Oh yes! Great find. My skin also feels way less dry and itchy after a shower since I installed a vitamin c shower filter. I did it to cut down on the amount of chlorine we are absorbing and inhaling; the skin aspect was just a bonus.

Back when I did still work I would stop at the gym several days a week. It was out of the way, taking as long to get there and home as it did to do the working out. Could you maybe invest in a set of used weights/machine and your preferred cardio machine? Would cutting out that commute (and the fees!) and the requirement to go straight from work ease things?

Lube never hurts, either. Coconut oil is the bomb! Edible, smells good, and no nasty chemicals! Double check condom friendliness if you use them (we don't, so no idea). Use the oil during foreplay to massage backs, fronts, everything. This isn't very unlike after having a baby, honestly. Slow and steady. It will help if you initiate, subtly, after making a point of thinking sexy thoughts throughout the day to "get primed". TMI, but oral is the number one way to get me "passionate" and double my …

Great question! I used to wonder this same thing. I've been a SAHM for 17 months now, and spent my pregnancy and about 6 months leading up to it working only on-call as SAHW so we could adjust to a single income. 3:30-4:30 husband wakes and makes breakfast for everyone, leaves for work at 5-6 (I had been doing breakfast, but in those wee hours is when Kidlet most notices that he's alone in the bed and is more likely to wake up. husband enjoys cooking and having that alone time before work) 7:30-…

I'm having a hard time with this one. I try to take anything said by a pregnant woman with a grain of salt (having been pregnant myself for most of 2015). Hormones made me quick to take things personally and harder to think rationally or from another's point of view. "Hormotional" to quote someone from the BabyBumps sub. That being said, from OP's description, it does come across as controlling to me. I've known my husband 18 years, been together 17, married 7. You can sometimes be surprised by …

Woo doggy! I'm glad someone pointed this user out as a troll. I was wondering how/why my statement needed explanation on this sub... How would kids even know they are third fiddle? 😁 They will only know what you are already demonstrating, that you care for/about Dad, that things Happen in a certain order, that not everyone is equal within a home, let alone in the real world. Dad, on the other hand, is totally going to notice if he's put on the back burner.

Having gone through that what if, and finally come out the other side successfully, I'd recommend to have a plan that you are both happy with in terms of a childless future before you try to conceive. With the prevalence of unexplained infertility these days, it's wise be clear at the very beginning rather than assume it will happen.

Short, crude, and the truth. Great food for thought. "How did the kids get here?" Yes! It's important for children to witness the playful, affectionate bond that sparked their creation. But more importantly, no man should feel like a second class citizen in his own home.

I'm not sure how your husband's job is during the day, but is there any way you could sometimes take him a hot lunch? Even if he doesn't get the classic thirty minute break, it always feels nice to get out of the house and drop something off with a quick hug for baby. I agree with the recommendations to just mould yourself into however he chooses to relax in the evening. Snuggle up on the couch and just share space. Oh that's so awesome to be able to make that decision. I've detected a subtle shift in my husband since I stopped working outside. Like it means something to him that I trust him enough to be our only income. I could be in a seriously bad spot without him, having a sizeable gap in my work history now, and that's not lost on him. Have you noticed anything similar? I think a big part for many is that it's not exactly common these days to be in such a trusting, truly compromising relationship. Some…

How much do you make? How much does daycare cost? Oh! You'd only have to cut out $300 dollars in spending to stay home. Not to mention that lowers your taxable income and leaves you time to meal plan which saves even more money... My sister's response was that she "expects certain things" that they couldn't afford if she or her husband decided to stay home (the giant cable package and eating out all the time). It's amazing how easy dinner people assume it to be! I quit regular work and only took on call jobs when we started trying to conceive so that we could ease into the single income. Several people commented on how nice that must be, being home all day, as if I just sat there doing whatever I felt like. I just reminded them that I was doing by hand the things they pay others to do, so it was roughly as fun as you would expect. Strange looks and which subject changes. Was staying home these six mon…

This exactly! Every. Single. Mom friend that I have has told me they would "go crazy" if they were "stuck" with their kids all day. What the F?! I would go crazy leaving my kiddo with a stranger, hoping that they A) didn't get to hear the first word or see the first step and B) actually paid attention at snack time in case of choking. Now, that's coming from women who "expect a certain lifestyle", so I guess if cable TV is so important that you want to miss 1/3 of you're children's lives then...…

I do this too! For me it's when I get overextended and fatigued. My body craves quick energy which translates to carbs (because they burn faster than protein or fat) in the form of sweets. It's taken several years since I noticed this trend in myself, but now I keep fruit on hand that I eat with cheese, so I get the sweet taste plus fat and protein for true energy. For particularly nagging cravings I'll make a gluten free mug cake so I don't have a whole cake to battle my will with. Another thin…

Actually, no, I don't. All of the women in my circle (about 8, including mom, sis, MIL & SIL) are very proud of and tied to working outside the home.
