Even if you are absolutely correct that men have nothing to do with this problem, why would that mean that they can not do anything to help? I am sure I have occasional opportunities to support, encourage, or influence others if I am open to them. To be sure if I rushed out and tried to confront this ridiculous problem head on, I would probably waste lots of energy and not get very far. But what if my daughter bemoaned her clothing choices for a social event. I might by my words and actions help…

no, that is a foolish idea and won’t work if I could police how someone speaks and acts, I would not waste it on this small problem. If I wanted to try to end this particular problem, I wound work where I do have influence - my own children, maybe friends. I do not propose that this would happen quickly. Too, by your response, It seems you have already decided you are powerless to effect change. If that is so, replying to you is probably a waste.

Am I saying that my opinion is somehow superior? Nope. The exact opposite of that. I have my truth. You have your truth. We could both speak honestly about our experiences and say different things which are true for us. For example (to give clarity) I might find that the people who work at Bargain Mart are always helpful and you might find that they are rude and lacking in knowledge. Both are valid views based on our experience. We both have real evidence to back up our claims. We could actually…

Im not there. How could I possibly speak out? I agree that your making comments to women in general or making comments out of the blue would probably end poorly. It would be foolish for me to argue with you about what happens in your life. I have the opportunity in my life to say "Isn't this just a sexist double standard?" And you apparently do not. I wish for you the opportunity to take the actions you want to take in the future. It can be hard to speak an unpopular opinion. (I had a little of …

Right. Don't pretend to agree. Isn't there a way to say "Yeah, I just can't agree with you there." and also accept that for that other person their opinion, however wrong it sounds to you, really does sound right to them?

I do not know where I blamed you. I have said several places in this discussion that this problem is not because of men. I have also said that if this is not a fight you want to get involved in, then don't. I have said that I wish I had not written that we have a responsibility to fix the problem. I can see that this language is too strong - that I am imposing my values/opinions/priorities on others. I still believe that the original post (with the screenshot of the two comments) does not blame …

Ok. Serious question. Do you mean: (A) Lazlo, when you said "my truth" that is BS because there is only one real truth and you should have said "my opinion". (B) Lazlo, you have written things in this discussion today which are not just your opinions, but factually or historically, or scientifically untrue. (C) Something else (please explain).

Vilified? Where in this discussion are men vilified? The only person in this threaded discussion suggesting that men have ANY responsibility is me. Certainly OP's original post only contains two opinions, which are not incompatible. Men do get this one thing easier sometimes. AND Men are not MAKING women wear different clothes to every event.

Seeing how this has gone, I regret saying that it is our responsibility to fix this. While I believe that is true for me. I can see that this opinion is not held by some people in this forum. Projecting my values/morals/priorities has been ineffective. I might have made my point better if I had said that 'we have the opportunity to fix this problem' instead of that we have the responsibility to fix the problem.

Why blame anyone? Who cares how the mess got made? Why don't we just clean it up? I do not feel blamed by someone saying that it is my privilege to do something. It is lousy what some women do not feel that they have the same privilege that I do about this particular thing. When I go the the store, I do not get asked for an ID because I look old enough. That is my privilege. If some young person said that I get it easy in this one way, they are right. I get to save 10 seconds in the line at the …

I prolly can’t change how people feel. I can say “hey, isn’t that a double standard?” without blaming anyone in particular for the existence of the double standard. I am sure there must be a way to communicate that idea, so that the listener knows am not blaming or criticizing them. I believe that, as a grown durn man, I have some responsibility to make the world better. I can not fix everything. I could for example, decide I care about an endangered animal and donate money to promote its welfar…

I did not try to explain HOW the double standard came to be. I am sure others know that better than me. I was not thinking about all the things you said. It is sexist if one sex has different rules or expectations which have no physiological or biological basis. If clothes rules are do not relate to anatomy or physiology they might be sexist. I think that women ‘being unable’ to wear the same outfit twice is due to some sexist mechanism - no matter who is to blame. I DON’T think it has much to d…

No? Have you never ‘agreed to disagree’ or had a friend who belonged to a different religion, or rooted for a different sports team? What do YOU call it when you disagree with someone AND their ideas still deserve respect?

So if I am not responsible for other people’s ideas, issues, problems or what have you, why should I feel upset about what they say?

I can only speak my own truth. If you see it differently, then perhaps leave it be? I mean, if you don’t care what other people wear, tell them if they ask.

I did not cause all kinds of things I can be responsible for fixing. Social, political, and economic problems caused by prior generations. It is true that I can choose not to help, or to defend the status quo. I do not think I have very much influence over how other people feel. If I heard a friend or co-worker talking about this issue, I could choose to say “ That is a sexist double standard that women can’t wear the same outfit to multiple functions.” or something similar. If it said enough, m…

Wearing the same outfit is make privilege. That does not mean is is Men’s fault. Everyone enforces privilege, often in ways they are not conscious of. Stop feeling blamed. Feel responsible for fixing the mess, not for causing it.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
