Pity for outrageous beliefs that stem from mental illness make it CLEAR that the person is far removed from a coherent argument, aka shunning. But at the same time, it's also a more rational approach and leaves a less destructive path. Feminism didn't gain power because we pitied them, it gained power because it had followers supporting it. I think the lack of protection wasn't really a gender issue, it was a shitty police work issue. I've heard about plenty of women too who were the victims of crime due to shitty police work.
