The study that tells women the doctors don't listen is skewed. Men turn up for diagnosis towards the end of a disease when it's easier to diagnose because they know no one will take them seriously whereas women turn up at the start of disease knowing that they are at the front of queue and will be investigated. As long as it works both ways perhaps. If this is acceptable, then a man can say he'd rather not have female friends/contacts other than occasional transactional.
