BTW, there's a lot that I can agree with in the video. There are certainly obstacles to overcome for abused men. But there's also a pretty clear slant to this video.

That's absolutely false. As I said before, I am a male who received help from a shelter. I severely doubt I found the one shelter in the entire country that would have accepted me in a town of 50,000, and it sure as hell wasn't in the California desert. I also know of multiple shelters in my state that also accept men. The people who "searched the entire country" did a really shitty job.

If you read my other comments, which have been downvoted to hell, I really don't think the name needs to be gendered. I was really just trying to explain why I thought the gendered name had been given. My point is just that arguing about the gender in the name doesn't do a great deal to help men who are facing violence. The fact that men have the opportunity to get help from local crisis lines and shelters thanks to funding from VAWA is a tremendous benefit to men like me who have survived DV an…

As it's now 2 a.m. where I am, I won't read through the entire bibliography tonight, but let's just say I did and say that I concede to this one point. Even if there is in fact more violence against men than there is against women, complaining about the name of the law, trying to repeal it, or blocking reauthorization doesn't help men to the same extent that other projects would. Excuse me, but I'm a male survivor of DV. So first of all, I have no interest in minimizing the problem of DV against men. It is a problem and we should do our best to encourage men to self-report. But I've never seen any indication that DV is as severe or pervasive against men as it is against women. And at the very least, I've seen no evidence that disproves the idea that more women die from DV than men. But really, you're missing the point. Like it or not, VAWA does help men and it does help …

The "there is no 'violence against men act'" argument is a bit silly. VAWA provides funding to shelters and advocates that help men as well as women. I received services from a shelter that accepted both men and women, and received no interference. VAWA is named as it is because the majority of DV is against women.
