Always love a good clip of Norman Finkelstein. This one is a true classic and very well known . Finklestein is to my mind the best living example of a scholars moral and intellectual dedication to human rights. I can't think of many public intellectuals who so impressed me for his uncompromising pursuit of truth and justice. The man is truly a fearless, determined, and excellent scholar, and activist for Palestinian human rights. He has done it all during a very difficult time to do so. At a tim…

do you not realize this is story that makes the news on a regular basis? someone punches somebody the face and the head trauma results in death from the blow, the fall or both. look into it.

The irony of this statement is remarkable. you need to learn a few things about life dude. because you clearly don't understand about proportion when looking at outcomes.

must be a lot of immature dudes downvoting you here because you are exactly right. The same shit can happen in any fight. But in a big mismatch the idea are greater. people are so wrapped up in the principle here they won't listen to reason.

becuase you escalted the situation like a child. If you had impulse control and simply made a complaint about the harassment you received, she might have been reprimanded. you think by now you would absorbed something of a lesson from that whole episode but it doesn't sound like it.

not really hypocrisy because the threat is not equal. The dude is obviously not afraid of her at all and no one is particularly concerned about her actually harming him. But when she goes to far and he gets mad, he could clearly inflict some really serious damage - as his first really good punch in the face showed. It was probably in his own best interest that others put a stop to it once he was enraged. It could have put him in a bad spot if he fractured bones in her face.

your sub and its content seem ok to me as fair comment. But you on the other seem like a huge asshole with a bunch of unresolved emotional baggage. Try not to hold on so tight to your own bullshit.

Read too much into it? Hell let's read a little more into it. This article is ridiculous in its bias. Why do I say that? Well from the fact that it gives quite a lot of the story from the side of the father and son. They give all their version of events and the issues and complaints they had with the process at length. But nowhere do we hear the actual story of the woman's testimony on these events. Not a word anywhere. Nor does she get a chance to respond to the claims made in the story. Which …

Correct me if I wrong but doesn't the report here say it's the woman who files a complaint. In response the young man makes counter claims, which the school believed were "retailiatory". It's not the scenario you describe exactly. It's seem like an awfully misleading headline to the story if we are being honest.

Just an honest question. I am interested in what the view is here. It is not intended to offend. Is it ultimately helpful to say one is antifeminst to promote MRA positions? (Also, to a feminist audience we could pose a similar question of the value of claiming MRA is basically misogyny. But I don't have that audience at the moment) Doesn't this distract from the issues that are quite reasonable and could find sympathetic ears across the political spectrum if articulated well. If I am a proponen…

Slippery slope arguments should be avoided if you want to argue in good faith.

Your welcome. It's all too easy to shit on police in particular for being the face of perceived injustice. People don't want see the job in terms of its structure and function. People need to recognize how the nature of bureaucracy leads to all sorts of instances where the "one size fits all" approach to law is prone to failures. Exceptions abound and nuance can't be always be exercised when it is needed. It seems so absurd to me to make a civil servant in any capacity hold the bag for these pro…

I understand the appeal of this sort of thinking but of course it works best with appeals to extreme cases - as you have done here. You want to make compromise lead to that slippery slope of fascism. You know where it doesn't play so well? Its where you start acknowledging all the ways the world forces almost everyone in some way to compromise their personal values in order to make a living. You might find someone pointing at you and your selfish behavior in some capacity. Then it starts to beco…

His job is by definition to enforce the law as written. Every single cop has to take the same action. Your problem is with the legal system and the courts. You want to shoot the messenger?

No not really. I would suggest she was implying that he was assuming an air of superiority by feeding her general info to her as if his role was teacher and her role was student. She seems to believe this is a gender related. If so it means she likely feels insecure about her status as an equal intellectually. Instead of engaging in the conversation as equal would by sharing info and maybe redirecting the conversation to something more interesting to her, she shut it down to remove the symptom o…

Did you ask for some clarification about what in particular was objectionable about your response? I hate the term mansplaining but it usually crops up when a woman thinks there is some implied dismissive attitude or tone, or they feel they are not being according the respect they feel they deserve when being addressed. They may further presume this is connected to some sexism on your part. Coming off as smarter than them could be threatening and interpreted as a slight. This is a tricky one for…

The girl still claimed she was raped. Now I wonder why she might not have wanted to tell the court and the world that her step dad had been fucking her? Am I the only here who thinks there might be some understandable motives for that?

Well having a sense of the history of an issue IS a huge part of knowing what you are talking about. Its not a small part of the discussion. But let's say the speaker really is only thinking of present day. I can't read his mind here but lets say you are right and qualify the remark. Your claim of it being provable fact is one that would be my dream match up in a public debate. Just because you can think of examples that qualify as unfair treatment of men as a gender, it does not prove the state…

The op is the Lawrence of Arabia of evaluating gender based discrimination. A position so outrageous no one expects you to go that direction. Confirmation bias at its finest on the one hand and stunning ignorance of history on the other.
