I'm going to keep it short I need sleep. The big difference between the two is that in the book he goes way more in depth between the two cities and compares it to more cities (plus a lot more aspects of the global city debate are analysed). Yeah my point was more that there are real science and not just pop-science books out there. Yeah the lack of control group is indeed problematic, I would have loved for them to have included non-open access journals.

Depends on the field. Some theories are relatively old, for example Broken Window Theory that does not mean they are irrelevant. And if you are going to write an article and you use that theory, you need to refer to the original source.

A hard set of rules like that seems counter-productive. One should look at the context of the study and theories used. That a theory is 10 years old does not automatically invalidate said theory. It could easily lead to people discrediting posts by saying nahhh too old without ever bothering to go into any argumentation.
