I agree. The best piece of advice I have read is that until you can state an argument in a way that your opposition would agree with then you have no right to argue. If you don't understand why someone thinks they way they do then any argument you give to counter them will be like pissing into the wind.

Watch everything. Don't be worried about what someone labels you. I watch stuff I agree with and stuff I disagree with. Both are useful for helping me understand the world. In fact, I tend to try and watch more stuff I disagree with. Helps me hone my actual beliefs.

Interesting. Assuming what you say is true, it is the exact same thing we do in marketing. It is called "social proof". If I want to sell you a new gizmo, you may not believe my claims because I haven't proven myself. If one of your friends tells you that gizmo is great you may be persuaded to buy it. That is social proof. It is why many websites prominently place reviews of their products. That is social proof. In trying to meet someone of the opposite sex, that same concept of social proof see…

A fair bit. This is one of the only ones I can stand. I really dislike communities that hate others. Why I largely avoid feminist forums these days too.

Small steps. You aren't going to change our country but perhaps you can get a few people to question things. I started down this "gender issues" rabbit hole investigating the stats on the gender pay gap. Equal pay for equal work has been a thing since ages ago. I wanted to see how or why there could be such a gap. Now I am very informed and since how both genders have issues in society. Eventually your co-workers there might become decision makers and a small convo now means they are more attune…

You could step up, do the work and become a mod. The job seems largely thankless and a lot of work. If their job is being made harder to the point they want to step down then they do. If nobody steps up then this and many other subreddits will die.

If you have a patchy beard, you have a patchy beard. It may improve over age or it might not. Growing a patchy beard longer might help but it might still look "bad". If you can't grow a full beard, consider other styles that fit around your patchiness. Maybe you can rock a mo and sideburns. Perhaps a goatee is for you. Ask a trusted friend what they think of it. Sometimes going clean shaven is just safest and this is from someone who reckons everyone should have a beard. I use no product in my b…

Damned if you do and damned if you don't. It sounds like you are drowning and need to come up for air. Are you able to take a break from the situation and get some perspective?

Definitely this. Help someone even if you get no recognition, even if they don't even know you helped.

You said it would hurt his feelings but he doesn't really show you the same respect. He might not even realise what he is doing. That little interaction you gave is all about tone. If you hadn't said that he was being consdescending then I could read your response as quite rude. I naturally come across as quite blunt. I am not great but learnt that tone is as important, if not more important than what you say. I don't mean to offend people but it happens often.

Sounds like you two have had a pretty strained relationship for a long time. I can't imagine it would be easy to undo those relational patterns easily. I just learn to work around my dad's rough edges and let some things go to the keeper. We live in different states so we don't often meet in-person. My family can annoy the heck out of me for pretty small things. Might be worth investigating why you have such an intense reaction to your dad when you chill with everyone else. For me, it was my sis…

So many people are ignorant to the realities of life. Your situation sucks brother. Men can do bad things. Women can also do bad things. So ignorant to think one gender is better. Perhaps you could have defended yoursel or whatever. I don't know your situation. That is irrelevant. A women did something horrible to you and she is solely responsible for her actions. Others may not listen to you but remember you are not at fault. Stay strong.

As others have said run. Make sure you let others in your life know. She may try to do something extreme and having support who can turn up might avert a very tricky situation. Honestly, consider saying what you need to say and then block her. She has already shown she won't respect your boundaries. This is unlikely to change.

I think that is part of what explains police statistics. If a man and woman used full force in a physical altercation, the women is likely to suffer more physical damage. Also, for other reasons a woman is more likely to go to the police and a man is more likely to be charged with something. I don't think it explains the broad population surveys. Your argument definitely addresses popular opinion though.

Thanks for that. You have definitely done more research than me. I was originally going to share some information to my friends on social media but realised I couldn't explain the statistical issue I was facing. I originally started investigating feminism some years ago because the "wage gap issue" was so clearly an abuse of stats and methods to undergird a narrative. I think I am going to try and find out some more information on what mutual violence looks like. I have heard the self-defence ar…

Or the justification that because they are weaker the violence doesn't matter. Not like she can really hurt him right? Because it is only bruises or broken bones that matters. rolls eyes I am not downplaying the physical component of physical violence but I would rate the psychological aspect of it as worse for most victims. The person you should trust has betrayed that trust with violence.

In a very narrow sense, men on average are much stronger and therefore could do more damage to a women. Thing is, just because someone can doesn't mean they will. You could steal something from a shop and get it for free and yet for most in society, it wouldn't even cross their mind. There is power in being a victim. Even better if you aren't actually a victim but just assume the mantle of one. I find it interesting that men usually do not want the title of victim even if they are one.

I have heard the stat on lesbian couples but as you said, it would barely move the needle. The two studies I have looked (one from Australia and one from USA) are both large scale government run surveys. There are differences between the two but are close enough. If it was some academic study then I think some of your thoughts do well to explain those differences. I think mainly I need to try and find the questions and methodology being asked for some of the studies to work out why.

All I can say is that sucks. At least there is an end in sight. Stay strong brother.

Can you stay with a friend and put your dog up somewhere? Your situation sucks. I think you know your only option is to leave but that is complicated. I was in a situation similar enough to yours. I found it helpful to record things down. My memory isn't the best so having a log of all the stuff that happens can really help one clarify their thinking.

That is bloody rough. I am glad you managed to pull through. My situation didn't get as dark as yours but I think responsibility to certain things kept me acting smarter.

It is good to protect others. It is also good to feel emotions. I would not worry if another group has it worse. Someone will always be doing worse than you. If you have been harmed or hurt by things then that is important. Even if it is something small on the grand scale of things. Toughening up isn't ignoring things and letting them not affect you. It is being able to deal with those things and still keep going. You can become "stronger" by becoming "weak" in a way. I think I am a bit like you…

Still worth doing but I wouldn't place too much hope in it. People may well believe her side despite the evidence.

Yeah. When I said that I wasn't thinking about anything physical in the slightest. Think about what she might say to friends, family, co-workers and so on. Think of any potential reputational damage you might suffer if she decides to claim you did certain things. Her physically attacking you is the least of your worries. I reckon the emotional damage is far worse. My situation had enough similarities to you. The physical meant nothing to me (that is just how I am). The lies and deception were wh…

I think you already know the answer to your problem. The only question is how can you leave your situation safely? Someone who is happy to abuse you will likely be more dangerous when you are leaving. If she doesn't recognise the hurt she is doing then it would be very hard for her to stop doing it. You will need a lot of help and support after you leave. The patterns that have been forming with your wife will be hard to break. :-(

Serious question. What kind of things do you enjoy doing? What skills or talents do you have? You don't need to grind hobbies to be lovable. You don't even need to be good at them. I am learning Chinese right now. Been doing it casually for a year because I have many Chinese friends. Can barely say a thing. I suck at Chinese but it is a way to make a connection with my Chinese friends and colleagues. Do they love me because of this? Probably not but it is a point of connection and we build love …

That is very hard to answer without knowing more about you. What kind of interests do you have? What do you enjoy watching, streaming, doing and so on? Are you religious? What type of exercise do you like? I have made a lot of friends either because of my interests or because I meet people who share my interests. Made plenty of friends over the years just by being in the same place as them too. I focused on friends first as you seem a bit isolated. I find one things my friends are good at is giv…

"Comparison is the thief of joy." There are always going to be people doing it better than yourself. Maybe the opposite gender, a different class, a different race, your friends, co-workers and so on. There will always be people doing it worse than you. Sounds like life is really tough for you and life always seems greener on the other side. Sometimes it is but honestly, it probably isn't. Everyone has their own problems. We often just don't see them. Everyone puts on their best face but you don…

I found a combination of reading, wanting to change and going to the therapist meant I didn't need to go too much to the therapist. And if you aren't, definitely try and share your struggles with some mates. Some might be pretty useless but I found sharing super helpful. Particularly mates who went through stuff similar to me. Before this time I kept everything to myself. Tried to solve problems myself. I read something to the effect of, "your own efforts got you into this mess, what makes you t…

I was in a similar enough situation to you. Different details but close enough. Things won't be easy and there are likely no right decisions. My ex eventually did get better but that involved her leaving me and her going off the deep end for a fair while. She was seeing help through that time though and even then, took her maybe four years to "get normal". I think if your wife is refusing treatment you are in a very precarious situation. If she does seek treatment, things might take a while to g…

Like a fair few of my beliefs, they started from trying to prove something wrong. A good decade ago I heard about the wage gap and something about it just seemed slightly wrong to me. Did a ton of research and worked out how that entire argument is based on flawed assumptions and figures. I then looked into domestic violence and found the popular narrative to be pretty flawed. Essentially I was finding that big feminist talking points weren't great so I became a moderate anti-feminist. What even…
