Self defence isn't about destroying the threat, it's about dispelling any immediate sense of danger. Force used has to be reasonable and must match the level of the threat. A person waving a knife at you from 20m away isn't enough to warrant murder. However, when you pull a trigger of a gun you do so with the intention to destroy the thing you are pointing the gun at. If you watch the video there was considerable distance between the two at the end where he couldve shot at his leg to incapacitate the deceased.
