What isn't mentioned is that speed reading allows you to read the same material multiple times in less time overall than normal reading, and although initial comprehension is going to be lower, comprehension and retention both go up in the end due to repeated readings. I took speed reading as a class in middle school and still use the techniques to my benefit today.
