Extra support, extra grants, extra visibility, extra encouragement. If it were JUST this, I'd have less of an issue. But it's the demonizing of any masculinity and pushing of this oppression narrative that not only turns off women top the field, but men too.

Second . Was headed towards a path in engineering education, got involved in both an NSF fellowship for improving the pipe line for underrepresented minorities and a retention program to mitigate drop out rates once in university. I made it a few years before I couldn't handle the bias against white men for demanding proficiency in the basic engineering disciplines. The straw for me was being lectured to that low numbers in women's sports media coverage was due to sexism (in a "discussion" on wh…

Of course, I genuinely wish them well, but realize they don't have much to offer. I see them occasionally, and I doubt I can teach them to not act like bitches, so I just what I be what I do. Guys here can be a bit rough at times, but they're speaking the truth they see. I mostly lurk, but it's st pats and I've had a few, everybody else is napping. You don't have to like and agree with everything to learn from it. Here's what it is to me: I wish you luck in whatever your venture, and I hope to enjoy the time while our paths cross. Reviewing this, I would like to clarify that I am receiving this with openness, but there is a bit of "tough talk" below and I intend no malice with my statements. a lot of people make their allies with people they can relate to really easily While I don't care to package or couch this as a discussion of "allies" (to which I'm assuming the opposition is "enemies"?), I can see what I think you are trying to say here. I was trying to be tongue in cheek with the feminist-kin bit there. Looks like I failed, shit, my apologies. I surely wasn't telling you what to call yourself, but rather what people will hear when you say it. I've had more than a few folks call me feminist in the last few years when it comes up, and maybe by their view I am, but I'm not seeing the connection to what is being put out by the big feminist voices. Call yourself what you like, but don't expect that people will hear exactly what you …

I think you may as well say that you are feminist-kin because you are not using words correctly. What I'm concerned about is suicide rates, domestic violence, genital mutilation, paternity rights, alimony, child support. Don't get me wrong, if you held a rally about this and it took place in my town, I'd still show up - but let's be real here. There are bigger issues. Interesting, there may be acceptance bias, and these numbers suggest there is. However, this also might be a result of "self-selection" or "efficacy" bias, which I don't know if we can see in the raw numbers. By this, I mean it could just be that of the women might lack confidence that they would even be accepted to these schools because their applications are weak, so they don't apply unless they feel like they are certain to get accepted, leading to an overall higher "quality" of female applic…

I totally agree that most kids are raised by biological parents. And I also think market forces could be a good dover for this. However, I'm trying to view this from the standpoint of the father that doesn't know he has a child, not the other man raising said child. If I had a child, I'd want to know and I think I have a right to be the father of my child (with some caveats of course like non abusive, stable life, actually want kids, etc. )

most births are of children that were conceived by the two legal guardians. So if we did paternity tests, this would be by and large an unnecessary increase in government spending IIRC manwomanmyth claimed that in some areas of England 1 in 6 children are not raised by the biological father. Granted "most" children are raised by the biological father, but there is a significant proportion that is not. Generally occurs in poor areas, where child support and fatherlessness is already a problem. No…

Was just at er for excruciating hip pain. When I went in for xrays, my wife was asked if I hit her. I was not asked this. This is a great point. Your previous posts about them already behaving as good scouts sounds like a pie in the sky platitude to me and I don't think that is a reason to let them join. It's just too similar to, "well he's great at volleyball, why doesn't he join the team?!" Or "I already exercise daily, why can't I go to the women's only gym?" "I know how to take a shit and the ladies room is just a better fit for me". The fact that women are already allowed is a much better arguing point, but I …

I think we are witnessing the fact that somewhere around 20% of any population will be "mold breakers" and not be satisfied with what satisfies the other 80%. I think this tends to be at issue in small communities, where that 20% is on the order of tens to hundreds of people, who then cannot get together as a result of sparse population density. It's unfortunate, but damn, sometimes life is tough.

There is a common theme in many threads here: the loss of male only spaces. Many here, but not all, recognize that men and women - while largely similar - have several important distinctions. Accordingly, men and women have a different set of needs. One need they share is interaction with members of the same gender as well as interactions with mixed genders. Men and boys need spaces of just men and boys in order to learn about men and boys, full stop. I can only speak for myself, but I would be …

It's unfortunate that you're being downvoted when you are (I think obviously) adding to the discussion. I disagree wholeheartedly with you, however, and think that some instances of gender segregation is needed. We see instances where it is needed for girls, and thus, we are rather forced to accept that this is also needed for boys. It doesn't matter if some kid has a hearing aid, if some kid is gay, or if some kid is a girl. It just doesn't matter. This is flatly wrong. Boys and girls are diffe…

It really comes down to this for me. Great post, got me thinking. You not being able to take me to court has no bearing on whether or not what I did to you was an act that could be classified as rape This is a really important point. I'd like to add another point: just because you consider it to be rape does not make it so, which is why we have courts and now it gets crazy because of difficulties associated with the burden of proof I wish I had a way to make it better or at least some good news, but I don't.

That's the real reason for the wage gap - men are expected to go into higher paying jobs while the jobs women are expected to go into tend to be lower paying. this is not the reason for the pay gap. Men and women both choose which fields they enter. I'm tired of seeing some feminist say something horribly sexist, have the MRAs descend on the article or post or whatever, have everyone yell the usual stuff, and lather, rinse, repeat Ditto. To be fair, it was a program for encouraging "under represented" groups in STEM, but it was led by feminists and often would throw men and boys under the bus. Yay NSF funded programs! The men in the group were constantly given the "of course you all are different". I learned to just tune it out, fighting it risks my future, and I wasn't going to change the director's mind, she grew up in a different era. Most everyone else would just roll their eyes the whole time.

Thanks for pointing this hogshit out. As a STEM educator, I can guarantee that backlash I would get for saying something similar about a girl's math ability. I would definitely bring this up with the administration. Essentially, "I'm a man, and it is not uncommon for childhood education to be a hostile environment for men and male educators. We both need to cover our asses don't want to see any problems between me, the students, and their parents, so what should I be doing to ensure this?" While it's interesting that the breakdown matches the total population demographics, do you think all women are working and all men are working? What I'm getting at is that while the breakdown reflects the population at large in the US, does it reflect the working population?

It's early for me, coffee is still brewing for god's sake! Ummm...sound bites I've heard (which should be fact-checked): the gender reading gap is 7 times greater than the gender maths gap, there is gender bias in grading (women teachers give better marks to girls than boys, even for the same work) and that is a problem because early childhood education is absolutely dominated by women (I'm thinking at least an 80/20 split) and poor marks early on essentially cause self-defeat in boys, who tend …

It may be best to look at this in raw numbers, rather than as percentages within a few fields. The total number of boys "failing to launch" is growing daily. And while there may be a few more men than women in maths and sciences (really just physics at this point, bio is mostly women and chem is nearly 50/50), people in these fields only represent a small portion of the total population.

I've heard similar. I'm not suggesting that it is only for attention, but if one is worried about the pain of dying, perhaps they are not wanting to die. Suicide is not performed on a whim, it's calculated.

IMHO, you're disgusting and unnatural. Foreskin absolutely serves a purpose. In sexual intercourse, it acts as a lubricant, allowing a "gliding action" of the penis, making sex feel better. I know, we have lube now, but as for hygiene issues, we also have soap now...and it is more readily available than lube. Yes, the resurgence of circumcision was aimed to reduced sensitivity, and thus, sex and masturbation for boys, similar to (some reasons for) FGM. It also leads to less pleasure for women, too, as the foreskin allows for facile insertion of a penis into a vagina. Doctors from years gone by did goofy shit, under the guise of "health", and this is an archaic tradition. If a man wants to cut up his penis, go for it! Just have 911 on the ready. But a baby? Delivery man brings food, is stopped at stairs due to the man behind the camera not wanting the neighbor to see, they say they don't have enough money and need to go into apartment to get it (delivery man essentially hides face from camera the whole time, but agrees to go in, in order to get paid). they (camera man and woman in bra and panties) now have money, but want to play a game called "tits or tips" whereby the delivery man can either take a cash tip or see the woman's "tits". he chooses t…

Bro. You argument lacks substance, bluewit is spot on. to change laws like this, one must act, showing the frivolity of such charges for such acts. yes they (the man shooting the video and the woman) will likely be fined or throw enough at it to shake the charges, setting precedent for shit like this to not be the court's issue (and thus, not an issue). I read the comments, and then watched the video, pretty much exactly what I expected, the comments here laid out what happened in fair detail. I…

How is it more serious because she is a girl (I'm assuming in opposition to a guy)? Of course a person's body is theirs and theirs alone, but why is touching a girl a more serious matter (than touching a guy)? Why do you make this distinction? I am an adult, male human being and I would not like it very much if someone grabbed my person (unless I asked for it to be done). Would this become more serious if I changed one word in the previous sentence, specifically male -> female?

It was a clear violation of personal space and definitely a more serious matter since it was a girl. What the shit? More serious because it was a girl? Please explain this point further.

Ah, I was confused, it sounded like you were condoning that behavior, rather than just explaining it (that you were rationalizing the behavior in a way to say we should not just expect it, but tolerate it), which was the root of my "bone to pick at" as well. The term was originally used to describe the strange things that happen in prison, and it's still an accurate descriptor there. People are more likely to assume that a man is educated and knows what he is talking about This is interesting (see my other "wall of text"), but I feel like this is an unfair assumption for both genders. Perhaps it stems from who is more willing to carry on an argument and/or discourse about a topic in which both parties lack a deep understanding; and, as a result, whoever carries on longer "wins" (question mark?)

I can say that I have never heard of "mansplaining" before, but this sounds like one party becoming "butt hurt"; perhaps I am not well-versed in belittling women. the woman fails to speak up and correct the man, saying "look, I wasn't just guessing, I actually have studied this topic for years" If you don't speak up and then feel dismissed or belittled, then that is your fault, and this is very much in line with loose-dendrite's explanation.
