Just look for one that is trauma trained, or has training in DV, they will have it listed on their Psychology Today profile for example. They (marriage counselor) will be the most aware as DV is covered very well in trauma training. You can ask the counselor extensive questions about their approach, experiences, and knowledge on the subject. My personal opinion (not professional opinion), I don’t think anyone can understand things like trauma, DV, addiction, etc. unless you’ve had some exposure …

Ok, I’m going to get on a soapbox so I apologize in advance. A lot of therapist aren’t trained in domestic violence so they never pick up on what we call covert abuse (keeping you in debt so you can’t leave, stop taking birth control to guilt the husband into staying/cost him more money to feed the family, withholding affection for minor infractions such as talking to your mother too long on the phone when she wanted you to hang up, etc).
