I was confused by your wording. You identify as red pill, and you don't agree with the advice in theredpill subreddit, correct? What don't you agree with? How do you believe MGTOW is better?

Reading your binary choice reminds me of a Hamlet quote: "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." I think the problem is that you are trying to simplify a complex issue. There are dozens of possibilities, not just two. The appeal of (and problem with) TRP is that it says sex/love/relationships are actually very simple if you just buy into their philosophy. Informercials and astrology and superstition work basically the same way. So, you are lik…

I'm perfectly willing to accept "the premise of your question is bullshit" as an answer. But I'm not pushing any agenda. I'm asking you (and other folks on purplepilldebate) a question. It could just be that my estimates about the overlap between Redpill, MRA, and neomasculinism are wrong. If MRA don't consider Roosh an MRA, and Roosh doesn't consider himself MRA, that's fine. But don't MRA and Redpill still have the same problem with mainstream acceptance? I mean, I've read some MRA, redpill, a…

But the relevant portion is that they are both secret movements. If the analogous part was that they are both movements, you could have named nearly any social movement to make your point. But your analogy needed a movement that requires secrecy. The reasons for the underground railroad's secrecy is the potential for being murdered and enslaved. Yeah, but I saw this as similar to the divide between libertarians and conservatives. American Libertarians sometimes differentiate themselves from the American conservative movement, but libertarianism is clearly a subset of conservatism.

Men's rights activism includes many ideologies, including but not limited to the social and legal definitions of rape. You may not agree with Roosh's views but this is clearly part of the MRA conversation. That's one reason why I posted: do Red Pill folks have any agreement with MRA on rape?

I'd agree with you that some people choose not to identify with the label, but the reasons are various. It's probably true that rad fems have given feminists a black eye. But it's also true that conservative commentators like Limbaugh have made a concerted effort for over two decades to badmouth feminism. And it's mostly just impacted those already susceptible to that message: conservatives and right leaning moderates. It's also true that changing views on gender and sexuality have made feminist…

Oh, I see what the problem is. My intended premise of discussion was: what do y'all think about this poll? I wasn't trying to say I believe there are a ton of feminists. I honestly don't know how many there are because this is the first time I've even thought about or read about how many people consider themselves feminist. I think I was in a hurry when I made the original post and wasn't clear in my title. I should have attributed the 6 in 10 claim to the poll instead of making it seem like I w…

You make an important point here about self labeling. You like red pill but don't label yourself as redd pill. I think that's what's happening in the vox poll (and maybe the kaiser poll). There are women and men who like feminism but don't label themselves feminist. I probably fit in that category. I'm not feminist because I think feminism generally places too much value on the language of the debate, but I like feminism, because it identifies social problems like gender inequality and wants to …

Shaenon made the point below that I was going to make. The wording of the question affects the result. Also, the demographics are different in each poll. The respondents to the Washington post kaiser family foundation poll are generally poorer. Vox has more respondents from the south. I don't see where Vox provided the detail on party affiliation, but I think the kaiser poll had more Democrat respondents. I found the full poll. Nah, I responded once to a particular question. Every other time I thought I'd have a relevant response, somebody has already made the point for me. Like for instance Shaenon's post above above the wording of questions. The discussion has carried on pretty well without me. I wasn't posting this to cram anything down anywhere. I was genuinely interested in what you thought. If people think there are problems with the methodology or that it's an outlier, that's a reasonable position.

The further you delve into RP links, the more you find overt sexism, such as the dark triad. And as you get further to the edges, you find connections to more extreme corners of the manosphere, like the dark enlightenment. To be fair to RP, it's a continuum, so not all RP folks are sexist, bigoted assholes with a political agenda. But I see RP as a precursor to a broader movement in the future.
/r/PurplePillDebate03/01/16 08:06 AM

Does it really, though? Yeah I think so. RP folks say that RP is about sex and self-improvement, but if you follow their links far enough, you see that the sexual strategy goes hand in hand with political, religious, or cultural beliefs about gender.

I wasn't talking about objectivity. I was talking about Objectivism, a philosophy started by Ayn Rand, that treats selfishness as morally good. I definitely don't agree with Objectivism. But I'm not sure how much I believe in objectivity. I'm slowly beginning to believe that we can only view things subjectively. I'm not commanding you to sacrifice. I'm pointing out that we are all better off if we look out for each other.

If it's acceptable in your opinion for men to choose traditional roles or classical masculinity, then why do you condemn those who do so? Nah, I'm not condemning the choice of classical masculinity. I lift weights, do MMA, manage/make the money in my marriage, etc. But I really don't RP's negative view of women. As a dude, I get where you're coming from. But do try to remember that feminism was a response to some pretty harsh conditions women endured for a long time. TRP wants to return to a world that was really bad for a lot of people: women, minorities, LGBT, non-"alpha" men.... I wouldn't give RP credit as a modern reading of Hobbes. It's more of a diluted reading of Ayn Rand. In fact, RP makes an opposing argument to Hobbes. He was making the point that the war of all against all was in the state of nature prior to civilization where we give up some rights as part of the social contract. To be charitable, RP is more like game theory, where we compete for resources even within the social contract. I'd say that RP is cynical about women specifically, and less so of men.…

Is it not? It gives better guidance than the static-laden signal of all the other sources of advice. Sorry, I keep trying to explain this point. And failing, I guess. RP is one coherent set of ideas. Conventional advice is many different conflicting sets of ideas. One coherent set of ideas isn't in direct competition with 15 different sets of ideas. Some conventional advice agrees with RP; some conventional advice disagrees with RP; some conventional advice doesn't respond directly to RP. That m…

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but I'll try to answer as best as I can. I remember 15 years ago having a pretty bad break-up that involved my ex-girlfriend and my best friend. No, I was just asking for clarification. I think that guys should have cohesive guidance on dating strategy. And I think it should NOT be RP. But I was making the point that we're using the phrase "conventional advice" as if it is one cohesive thing, even though it isn't. RP is not actually competing with conventional advice or even with feminism. Feminism left open a vacuum for RP to fill, mostly because feminist thought was never really designed to address men's complaints about dating. It's u…

Masculinity is becoming less rigidly defined, if that's what you mean. It's more inclusive. In other words, more types of men are accepted as men. But just because we don't treat nerds and Bronies as freaks doesn't mean that you can't work on your muscle car and lift weights. That's exactly the problem with TRP and reactionary movements in general. You guys were on top of the hierarchy for so long, sharing and equality are unseemly to you. Unless this axe is designed to murder babies and you hand to guys who are already pissed off about babies. To your mind, what's the morally good outcome of redpill? Is it just the sex? Or is RPW your example of the positive impact? You're right. It's on me. Weird interpretation, but can you do it with the same efficacy? Just want to make sure I understand you right. Whatever can be done most efficiently, you should do that thing? There is advice out there, but there is no organized system of advice that competes with TRP. I think there should be, but I think you're saying that if a system works, there's no question of whether you should use it. I'm saying that if that system harms other people like women (I think it does), individuals should decide not to use it, even if it's effective. Masculinity is not being chipped away. that's all that matters for us. I'm saying that you should raise your standards. RP has been the standard conventional advice passed on between men. Here's the bait and switch that TRP pulls on a regular basis. First you argue that TRP is value-neutral (it's just what works). Then you talk about how feminism has broken down the previous culture that valued male interaction. Now we're into men's rights. So, the reality is that TRP is part of a reactionary value system responding to feminism. TRP …

Words matter. They are not the most important thing (I think feminist ideology goes too far in this respect), but language clearly impacts behavior. An extreme example: in the run up to the Rwandan genocide, the Hutus didn't literally believe radio announcers when they said that Tutsis were cockroaches. But it still had a horribly negative impact on behavior. Are TRP precipitating a genocide? No, not even close. I don't even think your motivations are all that bad. But you don't have to intend t…

Someone being offended doesn't mean that you are prevented from using certain words. You have the freedom to say stupid, evil things. You don't have the freedom from criticism for saying those stupid, evil things. My experience is that people (maybe not you) who use the phrase "political correctness" act like they are so put upon because they say things like "All women are like that" and then cry a river when someone tells them, "that's stupid and here's counter examples." And in some cases RP f…

"Political correctness" as a phrase doesn't mean anything. It's used to describe anything that the user dislikes. I have no problem hearing cynical or non-standard views on women, if you can back it up with more than just your anecdotal experience. But I'd like TRP to address the fact that many people have been fucking (based on conventional advice) for longer than TRP has been around. Tell me if I have this wrong. My guess is that conventional advice for you was an amalgamation of different things that many different people (feminists, non-feminists, your dad, movies, TV shows) told you over your life. There was never a /r/conventionaladvice subreddit that you went to. TRP didn't really compete with some other view; it filled a gap that addressed your specific questions.

RP side RP says you need to believe in AWALT and abundance mentality in order to fuck more women. Assume for a moment that this is false. But a byproduct of believing this is that you ask more women out, and surprise! you fuck more women. If fucking more women is considered success, then you succeeded. I agree with your first paragraph totally. I also agree that interpersonal relationships are nebulous. I'm not sure if society is geared toward egalitarianism and gender-neutrality, since these ideas are relatively recent. My impression is that society is usually geared toward hierarchies (including patriarchy), but egalitarianism is a cross-current that has gained traction in the US because liberals were able to form political coalitions with moderates to break down some hierarchies.

Get off your asses. I think you're arguing that TRP provides continual motivation that conventional advice does not provide. I don't think it's true that conventional advice says you can be flabby and get laid by lots of women. But conventional advice does say (and it's accurate) that even if you are flabby, somebody somewhere will fuck you. But TRP assumes that fucking lots of women is somehow inherently valuable. I wasn't making the claim that I know every single woman better than you. I was making the claim that TRP's generalizations about women are false and non-falsifiable. You didn't ask about the non-falsifiable part, but that's even more important. TRP actually claims to know every single woman better than everyone by saying "All women are like that." I only need one example out of 3.5 billion women to prove it false. Yours is such a hard claim to hold up, it's incredible that you don't question it…

Absolutely. I'm fascinated by how people succeed in spite of themselves. People wrestle with difficult problems, often find the wrong answers, and use those wrong answers (somehow?) to find success. Our brains are hard-wired with so many cognitive biases, it's amazing to me that we ever learn anything. And yet we do. But for me, reading TRP (and feminist views) allows me to triangulate my own position how relationships actually work.
/r/PurplePillDebate02/01/16 10:59 PM

I actually don't disagree with your reasoning that TRP's appeal is that it answers this question. I just think that TRP's answer is false. So, it provides no actual advantage compared to conventional advice. It simply provides a justification for built-up grievances based on generalizations about women that are not only false; they are intentionally non-falsifiable.

All people suffer from confirmation bias. It might be easier to identify the few philosophies/strategies that do not suffer from it. Even worse, there are a ton of other biases that people are subject to. The problem with TRP is that it has little interest in mitigating those biases through theory falsification.

Hmm. Maybe? Hard to answer that question, because there is overlap between the two; they serve different purposes; and manipulation isn't the worst part of TRP. Some of the terminology is the same. Shit test is one example. TRP is a direct rebuttal to feminism and is specifically cynical about women. Seduction appears to be (I've read less of it than TRP) generally cynical of both men and women and is more of a technical manual. Seduction might have some disagreement with liberal views and femin…

No, I don't believe that at all. It's not arbitrary. TRP chose this word. It is a "term of art". In legal or technical fields, a term of art has a very specialized meaning separate from how it used colloquially. For example, an "appellant" doesn't just mean someone who appeals things. There are specific legal rights and rules associated with being an appellant. By analogy, TRP uses negging as a term of art within the context of TRP doctrine, namely that women are children who will manipulate and…

This concept of ambivalent sexism largely encompasses my views on this issue. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambivalent_sexism What surprises me about RP is that it treats its own views as a novel reaction to feminism, when in fact all of its advice about how to have a successful LTR has been tried and refuted. No, this isn't accurate. The premise that women don't love men is necessary for RP folks to dehumanize and devalue women. No. The point (I think) is that RP is cult-like or religion-like. To me, t…

You dodged my question. I wasn't asking about feminists'/women's motives for being in combat roles. I was asking if you support it, since your implied argument is that if women want equality, then they should share in the toll of war. Combat troops share in the toll of war, including for example being gassed. Do you support women in combat roles? Are you just saying you want women/feminists to compromise? Doesn't RP say that men should not compromise; women should just follow their captains?

You want feminism to ask for women to be gassed in order to achieve equality? Women are allowed to fill combat roles now because of feminism. Do you support this?

Is your position that feminism caused these things? Didn't military conscription precede feminism? Edit: do you support the recent expansion of us military combat roles to women?

I wasn't making an argument against a race or sex, so I don't see how. but ok

It's possible; it's just not the case. I benefit from a long history of patriarchy, since I'm one of the white cis males that joseremarque was "bravely" championing above. I was also young not that long ago. I'm not sure what status y'all would consider me now, but probably low status just a few years back. Even if you, or RP generally, could make a convincing case (hint: you haven't) that women are privileged as a result of society being overrun with feminists, you'd still have to show how femi…

I was characterizing/estimating what I believe BP folks think; not explaining my own position. Your previous characterization of BP is at best an exaggeration and at worst a product of years of grievance collection. You're using the same tactic that modern conservatives and anarchocapitalists use to negatively paint civil rights activists: You're the real racists for bringing up race. But in this case it's You're the real bigots for bringing up RP's misogyny. It's a dumb argument that convinces …

young low status white cis males No, BP thinks that young low status white cis males on RP are actually privileged and yet complaining that their problems arise from treating women like people instead of immature, shelfish fuckholes.

I think the difference is that RP's audience is disaffected men who want to learn how to fuck women. BP's audience is anyone who thinks that RP is an evil crock of shit to be satirized. Although BP isn't really geared to give guys another option for sexual strategy, I agree with your general sentiment that SOME sub should do that. The problem is that BP folks probably think that guys don't need a sexual strategy other than common sense (e.g. be nice to women, communicate effectively, etc.). Here…

My explanation was not very clear. I was listing out my traits, both average and non average, for full disclosure purposes, so you can decide for yourself. And then I was making the point that I'm funny and confident, BUT overall RP would probably consider me beta, since funny and confident are only two aspects of alpha. I could have elaborated and said, RP would probably consider me a white knight enabler beta given to bouts of oneitis, because I value individual women over the prospect of fuck…

With the rise of dating apps, isn't this becoming more of a moot point? If you can swipe through 10 or 100 people, and then message 1 to 10 of them, doesn't that replace the previous social etiquette of dating?

Hrm, I don't buy your argument that nobody has ever asked out average guys. Here's my own anecdotal experience: I'm a guy. Average looking face. Below average height (5'6''). Average muscle mass for my build, which might be below average overall, considering I'm a smaller dude. Above average intelligence. I'm funny and confident. I don't think RP would put me in the Alpha category. My wife of 7 years tracked me down by email after not seeing me for three years. My girlfriend before that was a fr…

The impression that I get is that TRP is arguing that: 1) If you do X, some Y percentage of women will react with Z. 2) If you do B, some C percentage of women will react with (D and not Z). 3) Z is preferable to (D and not Z). 4) Therefore, X is preferable to B. Where X is Redpill strategy; B is blue pill, feminism, or other non-RP strategy; Z is getting laid; and D is being ignored by women. Rhetorically TRP can take credit for the "Truth" of (X is preferable to B) as long as Y is not zero, be…
