I agree with you. I think a lot of people use these awards to point out that the film industry is so behind on women not being able to break in as easy because everyone focuses on actors and actresses more than behind the scenes. The Oscars is the only time anyone ever looks at who shot or who production designed a movie so it's the only time this stuff gets in the news outside the trades.

Movie making like any art form is subjective. Think of going into a modern art museum. The majority of the stuff looks dumb and pointless to me. However to someone in that community it's what they enjoy because they see the craft and thought behind every decision and how they broke the mold and all that while I'm just viewing it for entertainment value. That's less the academy's fault and more Disney. If you read the trades like variety and Hollywood reporter they didn't apply for that category for it. They wanted to have the road for black panther so they only applied that film for the majority of the categories.
