I can relate to this. I’ve been somewhat resistant to the idea of “low quality dates,” since I always liked the idea of just grabbing a coffee or a drink, but I’ve made a lot of progress in terms of recognizing effort and identifying a man’s values. I think that you’ve hit the nail on the head—paying for dates and putting effort into planning them reflects a greater, overall sense of commitment. It’s not about the money; it’s about what kind of man he wants to be. I say, don’t get attached to ea…

These stories are actually scary. When men start repeating lines that could have been lifted out of a romantic movie, you know that something is really wrong. That first man sounds like an actual sociopath. We must protect ourselves, ladies, by not getting attached to the idea of man, and assessing his reality instead. Take care of yourself, my dear, always. You can always rely on yourself.

It's hard to think clearly when you're in the middle of processing all of these intense emotions. You will feel better, and you will see things with a new perspective soon. It does sound like you are still idealizing him and romanticizing what happened; in a little while, he will seem neither as handsome nor as sweet as he does right now. :)

You aren’t alone; a lot of us here have felt what you are feeling. Prioritizing yourself is always going to benefit you in the long run, so you made a healthy decision. In my opinion, long-distance relationships are almost always impossible to maintain. Do you need this man to fight for you? Do you want the love of your life, or him specifically? You might be idealizing him, or making him into something that he isn’t. I understand that you have an emotional, sentimental attachment to him, but th…

It's evident. And I agree; it's so difficult to watch degrading behavior in other women.

You and I are in a similar position. I have stopped sharing details about my love life, at least with the vast majority of my friends and family. I almost always end up regretting it when I do, because I cannot escape the judgement, pressure, and subsequent invasion of my privacy. Many people, notably women, I now realize, have succumbed to the idea that a shitty man is better than no man at all. One of the most important things that I have learned from FDS is that being single and happy is much…

I can't believe how effective this is. I've been evaluating a bunch of people in my head, using these criteria, and I'm learning A LOT about how I really feel. I will try to be a two beers and a puppy person myself!

Is this supposed to be romantic? I mean, to each her own, I guess, but I wouldn't ever want to wonder, "would he have ever proposed to me on his own?"

Yes! Let's spoil ourselves. :)

I love this! I want my life to be so good, that I don't even want a relationship. That's honestly the best way that I can express it.

Reading your response made me consider how much time I've wasted just THINKING about men who aren't worth it. They don't even deserve the space in my mind. Thanks for sharing. Progress can be slow, but we're all getting there; I need the reminder sometimes.

Wow, thank you for sharing. Do not apologize for having written this! You deserve to be proud of yourself. Congratulations on everything that you've accomplished and overcome. All of the effort and attention that you invested in yourself is inspiring, and it's a reminder that we can always save ourselves. It's beautiful that you're focusing on yourself and your daughter; she will reap the benefits of what you are modeling for her.

This is a good analogy, actually. Now that I've started to change the way in which I think (thank you, FDS), I'm starting to have so much regret over how much of my time I gave to people who didn't deserve it. I still have a tendency to hold on to people for too long, but I'm working on it.

Free yourself. I’ve been where you are right now; I thought that if I were more compassionate, more loving, more understanding, and that if I explained myself better, he would change. Well, he had no incentive to change, since I kept tolerating it. You have to start valuing yourself. You’re the treasure, not him. Your love is great and amazing, not his. He does not deserve it.

As soon as you know that someone is trying to manipulate you, leave. It’s that simple. Don’t you deserve someone who is really interested in being with you? One thing that I have learned from this community is to not waste time explaining myself, begging, asking questions, and so forth. It is so much more efficient (and fulfilling) to go silent and completely withdraw my attention. It sounds like you’re begging for his love. This is an unhealthy dynamic, and one that will only continue to make y…

I would say that, ideally, yes, block and delete, but do whatever gives you the most peace of mind. <3

Here are my thoughts. It really struck me how quickly this guy started advancing the relationship. This is generally a bad sign; a man who is genuinely interested in you, as a whole woman, will not try to rush things. I’ve experienced this type of behavior, firsthand, and it ended with a lot of hurt on my end. And if that weren’t a red flag already, as soon as someone starts doing the hot and cold games, run. What happened with this guy isn’t about you. He could be a narcissist, or emotionally u…

I agree that she is underrated in many ways. I think that sometimes people confuse her, the person, with the characters that she played.

Exactly. She's looking out for herself. I'm surprised to see this in a film from that era, to be honest.

Exactly. I'm not trying to appeal to most men.

This is why I refuse to pursue men, and instead I let them pursue me. It weeds out the ones who aren’t truly interested. I can’t believe how blatant this guy is, but after I saw the comment about his mother…I’m starting to understand the origins of his expectations. This woman needs to run away, as fast as she can. She clearly needs distance, a lot of therapy, and some supportive female friends.

My background is Russian, and I cannot tell you how many times I have had men fetishize my ethnicity or minimize me because of it. I was told by one man recently that I "talk a lot for a Russian girl." That's the expectation for women in certain communities, I guess.

Thank you for the support! I blocked him, gloriously. I can only think of him as dead weight. As I said in my original post, I would rather be alone than stressed about whether or not a man approves of me.

This really hits home for me. I grew up thinking that being "selfless" was the most virtuous thing that I could be, and now I know why. I cannot tell you how much damage that kind of thinking has caused me. There is no reason to say that we cannot be compassionate, empathetic, and generous AND love and prioritize ourselves at the same time. I am so done with trying to please men.

It takes a very special degree of audacity for a man to think that he can evaluate "feminine energy," especially with words like "soft," whatever that means.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
