I hope you don't believe all ladies are this way! Just like there are bad men, there are bad women. Bad people. I feel for you in every instance that you name, and I truly hope things will improve. It sucks to see that so much of the world would improve if everyone stopped acting like assholes and could all talk to each other on a relatable level. I've never seen any stuff like you listed in your last bullet point. But this is the internet and I'm sure we could find a couple examples of women do…

I mostly get what you mean. I guess it's just hard for me as an Equity feminist to have other people try to say all of feminism is about hating men. The feminists who hate men distort the essential meaning. (In the same way the Tea Party distorts the essential meaning of the Republican Party. Or the yippies with liberals.) I guess I haven't been as political as if late, but to my knowledge, the man-hating feminists don't represent the majority. They are just more outspoken. There seem to be no s…

I like you. And in the end I think you're right on all accounts. I think both movements are flawed, but I also think both names are tainted. But I don't think either has quite as many radicals as it seems. (Radicals always seem to be the most outspoken, don't they?) I also think feminism (and perhaps men's rights, though I am less familiar) can have one broad meaning that so many people branch off of it's hard to find a clear commonality. I honestly don't think most feminists believe in preferen…

I don't agree with a bias towards mothers. I think the best parent deserves to care for their kids. From what I understand, rape shield laws are laws that make it illegal to question a rape victim about their sexual history in a legal proceeding. (Correct me if I've misunderstood.) I agree that is right. A prostitute can be raped and a wife can be raped by her husband (and a husband can be raped by his wife), etc. A person's sexual history has no relevance to their being raped. Consent is requir…

This one, which is on the side bar.

Why would I care about what? I said a variety of things in that comment and your comment isn't very clear on what it's responding to.

Education makes a person more qualified. Regardless of gender. All [eccoom, not you] said was more women are getting degrees than men. You say it like someone other than the person who wants a degree chooses who gets a degree. Are these men who aren't getting degrees being denied entrance into college? Or being denied the right to graduate? What is unequal or discriminatory about it?

My actions? What have I done to make me comparable to white supremacists?

I've heard a good amount of feminists of reddit say that they don't care for R/feminism because it's a bit extreme. I've never even visited it before. What's wrong with more women getting degrees? If that's the reason they're making more than a male counterpart, how is that wrong? Shouldn't people with degrees get paid more? I've never heard a statistic that young men get paid less than young women. In general, though it's technically illegal for employers to pay their employees at the same posi…

I agree the Selective Service is sexist. I'd rather none of us get drafted. But it's all or nothing baby.

Men can be feminists and women aren't necessarily feminists. I'm sorry it came out any differently. Considering the size of feminists as a group, I can't imagine a lot of male politicians getting advantages by catering to them.

I'm just really frustrated with that article on the sidebar that blames feminism for any sexist wording.

I phrased that improperly. Men most definitely can be feminists. What I meant to say was that majority of the people with whom we must blame for the sexist phrasing of these bills do not appear to be outspoken feminists. It seems unfair to me to blame feminists.

This is true. I realize this came out wrong. I suppose what I meant to say is that the majority of the people writing these bills do not appear to be outspoken feminists.

Nowhere in those definitions does it say anything about hating men or having a goal to gain an advantage over them. Just equality between them. And the internet may have gendered the definitions, but I've never had a gender studies class that didn't include equal treatment of men in it's studies and focus.

I took the article on the side bar to be a representation of this sub, which is I guess where I got the feminist-hating thing. Thanks for your input.

By definition, it has nothing to do with hating men. There are feminists that hate men, but I don't agree with them and they don't represent the 'whole' or even majority of feminism. In the same way I would hope that some of the mean women-hating things I've seen on MRA do not represent all or even most of MRAs.

This is a good point. I've been pretty conflicted on the concept of circumcision. It seems wrong to make anyone cut off part of themselves before they are old enough to decide for themselves. Many of the men I know seem to not care and are glad to be circumcised, which leaves it difficult for me to have a solid opinion. In the end, I believe the reason feminists see FGM differently is because it is for (or leads to) preventing the recipient from having sex or feeling sexual enjoyment. People see…

I'm just curious because that article was cited on the MRA sub as a way of 'explaining' Men's Rights. And the article really bothers me because it says Men's Rights and Women's Rights can't coexist without women admitting it's feminism's fault men are discriminated against in some laws. And I just can't see how that's true.

How many of these laws can be blamed on feminists, like the sidebar article wants to argue? In general, weren't most of these laws are written by men? [EDIT] I know men can be feminists and I phrased this point poorly. What I meant to say was that majority of the people with whom we must blame for the sexist phrasing of these bills do not appear to be outspoken feminists.

I am not saying that all we have to do is tell people not to rape and rapes will stop, but OP asked if incarceration is in fact a deterrent, and it's been proven it isn't. What I'm saying is that if people were better educated on what constitutes rape, perhaps less rapes would be committed. Is that unreasonable to assume? There is nothing that will eradicate all rapes. OP's example was the first time I had seen someone include gender in the "The message is don't get raped, when it should be don'…

Apparently it isn't, if rape continues to happen. Since when is "Don't rape other people" a bad message? You do realize women aren't the only victims of rape. Don't get raped is like saying, don't do something you have no control over doing. No one asks to be raped. Nothing is wrong with a person who is scared of getting raped taking preventative measures, but awareness pretty clearly needs to be taught to everyone on what constitutes rape, so people will be more aware of consent. In general, th…
